I was looking at my emails got a message from Overclockers.co.uk about deals and such, dont use it much only really if its a great deal. Yeah so i was thinking that DDR2 has shot up in price recently.

Only start of the year you could get a good DDR2 4gb kit for cheap.

For instance my Kingston HyperX ram 1066mhz was £40 second hand.
Its now on deal at Overclockers for £74.98

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-039-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=

NOT the best site for prices but damn i was pretty shocked to see that prices went up that much! In the USA DDR3 is now cheaper but still in the UK its a bit high, importing ram would be a sensible choice

oh well compared to the UK its still cheaper, i will note that RAM in general is now pretty high

i think its consumer demand or something, the availability of ram and the production all combining to make priced in general go up

Yeah im finding that DDR2 and 3 are almost the same prices now, but that DD3 is still pretty high but compared to DDR2 its the better choice even if it is expensive.
If it was me i would hold of buying ram just now, get a good cheap stick or second hand sticks something to just do by for now till the prices go down more which they will.
DDR was ridiculous prices when DDR2 was coming down but DDR2 got to ridiculously low prices last year and before, you never notice it till its gone unfortunately.

EDIT: Usually in electronics old tech starts to fall in price like Graphics cards or you can find DVD players for £10 now but RAM seems to be different?

Its because its one of the most commonly upgraded parts, so there is a demand for ram that isn't being produced, people can charge what they want.

Laptop memory? Well i don't have a laptop but it always had a premium so i can imagine that prices for that would have sky-rocketed even more than regular DDR memory.

Yeah Panther i guess thats why RAM seems to retain value so well.

I bought 2 kits of PI Black 900 MHz near Christmas and look @ what each cost me:

Look what it costs now @ the same store: end of the page (it loads main page 1st but give it a bit of time to load the GSkill RAM page).

It has jumped ... slightly ... in price ...

HTC that is a bit of a difference in price.

A plus for second hand sellers you can get at least what you paid for your ram or make a profit if you sell DDR2 RAM now.

For that, i would have to buy a new board + RAM and, unfortunately, DDR3 prices are still more expensive here then DDR2, bit quite a lot.

Yep I heard there is a shortage of DDR2 IC's and really it makes sense to me. DDR3 is really catching on. Think about it most new "off the shelf" OEM and office type PC's are Intel and all the new Intel's as we know (Core i5, Core i7) are DDR3 only. Even most AMD systems are going AM3/DDR3! I would only imagine most of the factories are moving over to DDR3 production right? That's my assumption anyway.

I know prices around here DDR2 and DDR3 are the exact same!! Seriously G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1066MHZ kits and G.Skill 4GB DDR3 1600MHZ kits are the exact same price! Soon I'm sure it will be even cheaper. Like how DDR costs more than DDR2 now.

Whatever is the most common gets the most production and is cheaper. The older stuff eventually gets stock piled or only a few factories continue to produce it.

DDR2 still is king in new office/home OEM systems and that has driven the demand up. Simple law of supply and demand. Don't put it past the manufacturers to cut production and starve the market in order to increase prices. God Bless Free Enterprise!

I also thought the lack of Vista catching on kinda killed DDR2 sells since the average PC user is going to upgrade their entire system before just upgrading the OS. When microsoft released their,"Free Win 7 upgrade with any new system purchase," DDR2 started flying out with the new system sells + Qimonda closing their doors was when I noticed prices really started going up and keep going up.

Oh yeah Qimonda isnt around so no wonder supply isnt as high. I still feel they are ripping us a bit i mean only a year ago it was almost half the price for the same ram, just seems like they just put up prices because they can.

The ram i bought in my Specs was £47 i sold my old kit of Kingston hyper x DDR2 4gb for £45 on ebayt i could've easily got £50 plus whatever postage might be.
