drive with bad sectors

my system crashed a few times the other day freezed on me so i thought id run chk disk and it shows i have bad sectors.the next thing i did was use my samsung utility to check my other disks they were fine however it said my main disk has got bad sectors so can not complete the scan and recomended i wipe the drive and then test again,however i can not do this as i dont have the spase to move my data, so my question is can i repair these bad sectors for free as i have seen people saying the drive will have spare sectors? any help would be great guy thanks

I had this before and "HDD regenerator" fixed the bad sectors, i guess its a free program since you can download the "try it" version, the process will take some time depending on your HDD's size [took me 1.5 days to fix my 250gb hdd] since it has to go trough every byte of your drive. BEWARE though, bad sectors means that your HDD is dying and will eventually stop working, so fix it, back up the important data, and then use it very lightly for non-important things.

thanks, its 500gb so i may have to buy that ssd i was holding out for and then i guess i can send it back to samsung if its covered by warrenty once ive wiped the drive

There is no way to fix a bad sector\block on a HDD although some times it's marked as bad when it's not.

So backup your data and format the HDD ( not quick format ). Then run chkdsk on it again and see if they show up.

If they do maybe your HDD is under warranty still ?.. Time for a RMA as when bad sectors start showing it it can get a lot worse depending on whats making the error.

Not always, just not a good sign. I have one Seagate here which has bad sectors on it for 5 and never got any worse and the drives about 7 years old now and is used everyday without issue..

I never got a replacement i figured that withmoving to another country they would not fulfill the warranty lol. Plus it was never giving me any issue's anyways.

HDD Regenerator fixes them, it doesn't simply mark them as bad.

i will see if i can get hold off a 200gb hard drive and use ghost and create a image and then format the long one

and put the image back on and see what happens. havent used ghost so will look in2 it b4 i do it

ok ive fixed the drive and run a scan and it seems fine, now how long should i wait to run he scan again to see if the drive is gettin worse?

I always wonder why people purposely risk their data...

Hard Drives are cheap, your data is priceless(or at least mine is). If a drive ever starts to show signs of being bad, RMA it or if it isn't under warranty get a new one.

With 1TB drives going for under $100 and 500GB drives going for under $60, there is no reason not to just replace the drive and not risk total failure and data loss.

the drive isnt full of data anymore ,however it does contain my os which has taken me ages to get how i want with my app ie xbmc ect so wouldnt want to have to start again

Ooh I expect to have to re-do my system about twice a year. I count myself lucky when I don't have to. I can get a system from stock to tuned just right in one night.

likewise twise a year used to be the norm, other then xp used to do that arround 6 due to stupid uodates ect! but my system has never been so stable appart from the drive and tbh i dont have the drive i used to have. im looking into norton ghost see if i can save the image onto one of my other drives with has 60gb spare but not sure if i have to make a partition hmmm

Back to the topic, it depends on how many sectors are going/gone bad. If it is a few sectors, the drive is okay. If it is a lot of sectors (and the HD Tune SMART page flags that as FAIL). Just about all hard disks are bound to have imperfections in the disk surface, which is why they have some extra unused sectors that the hard disk can switch to when regular sectors fail.

if the content on the HDD isnt important than i believe you can get a program that essentially tells the HDD to skip over those bad sectors when writing data. of course, if the content on your HDD is important, then get a new HDD.

nothing on the hd is going to drive me nuts if it fails other then the hassle of installing everything again. however i did a scan the other day this is what my drive is looking like atm

That is far to many bad sectors to just ignore...

One or two, do a chkdsk and mark the bad sectors, but that many means it is time for a new drive.

Something that I've seen mentioned before is that bad sectors are often actually physically chipped off the disk itself and then there's debris flying around in the drive, making things worse til it stops working.

the problem i have is that altho he drive has at least 1 year left of samsung warrenty when i type the sn number in on there website it says i have to contact the people i purchased it from which is ebuyer.com i have since shut my account with them as they wouldnt change my name on my account so i couldnt purchase from them anymore so i shut my account, i am left with either throwing away the drive or spending money on high rate phone calls bit of a gamble. however this has made me think this mean its time for ssd for my main drive. always seems to be the main drives ie c that goes first i guess the others are mostly alwasy in standby

I have taken apart hard disks before and found pits in the surface of the discs of hard drives. There is an air filter sort of device inside the drive to attempt to catch debris.

Bad sectors = dying drive.

Sectors MISTAKENLY marked as bad sectors, = drive not dying.

Thats all HDD regenerator does, is makes the drive double check if the sectors really are bad or not. it can only fix false positives, not truly bad sectors.

As I've said before, it depends on how many you get. A few bad sectors should be normal, as the discs can have imperfections in them. If you have lots of bad sectors everywhere though, your drive is failing.

So true, And could not agree more with that drive failing and last one i had seen go like that was a Fujitsu.
