The only info I have is there's a 550 watt psu powering it, probably not quality. Buddy wants me to tell his mother what is the best card for $100 shipped. I don't know honestly, 4770? Need your input please

If you could get that for $100 shipped, then go for it.

Otherwise, there are HD4830 and 9800GT.

Most HD 4770s I've looked at seem to be $110 shipped at best (no rebate involved). HD 4850s are getting pretty scarce, so those $90 deals from a few months ago have dried up.

I don't know how the prices are in the states but in Ro you can find HD5750 512 Vapor-X for about 115 euros,or just for either a 4770(Asus Formula or custom XFX) or a GTS250...100$ for a 9800GT/HD 4830 is far from the bargain of the millennium

I'd wager 19" honestly, this is an internet acquaintence.

Thing that sucks is I know there's some pretty good cards between 20 & 40 more, I have seeing him limited by $100.00 marker and it's not like this mother is going to snag a deal on a 4850 off the for sale thread.

That 4830 from the above post seems to be a great choice.

Not all 550w PSUs are good, if its any crappy brand then I would not want to take a risk in putting a 4850/30 or 250 in it and blow up everything. Safe bet is 4770, it almost consumes half the power of a 250 but comes close to a 4850/30 mostly.

I agree with the other posters above, tell him to get a cheapo 9800gt/4830, it'll do the job on a 19" (maybe even a 9600gt?)

For $100 it's the HD4850, of course.

Any 550W should handle that card.

You can get a 9800 GT "Eco" and not need a PCIe power connector (and it's easier on those "cheapo" PSUs).

A used 9800GT/8800GT/8800GTS 512/HD4830/HD4850/GTS 250 would be the best if you can't find a 4770, if you can for under $100 a 4770 would be good because it used very little power
