Ok, this is kinda embarrassing. There is something obvious I am missing...

I just plugged my PS3 into my monitor via the HDMI. Great, it works! (Have to firgure out network settings )

But the thing is I have no sound. Stupidly, I thought the pc speakers would automatically output sound for the PS3 but duhhhhhh, they are connected to the sound card on the pc. So is this not going to work the way I thought or am I just going to have to keep the PS3 for the TV.

Thanks in advance

I had this setup. I use HDMI for video. to get sound you need a compatical sound card with optical in. and either optical out for speakers or the option to convert spdif to analog.

I then ran the optical to my soundcard using 2.1pcm. (Can do 5.1 if your going optical out as well i think).

The sound card I use is HT Omega striker 7.1

would have to have a port designated as optical in. Otherwise yea, screwed.

the striker is $80 i think.

Do you speakers have optical in like z5500 from logitech or a home theater system

You don't use that adapter for the tv, he wants to use his PC speakers for his PS3.

All he needs to do is output video through HDMI and sound through AV. Plug both speakers and ps3 av cable to this adapter.

Cool. now my question is with that. do you still get 5.1 sound from that. cause i might do this with my receiver. run analog to white/red av for the purpose of playing guitar on my speakers w/o delay created by optical. As guitar goes to sound card by line in, then if converting to optical to goto speakers it has delay. but analog means no conversion so no delay.

It's stereo, it's loud, and it's cheap.

Customer Review from Amazon:
What this adapter does, is the same thing you would achieve by splicing the rear left, front left, and center speaker wire together and connecting it to a single-channel plug (a white RCA plug). Then the same thing being repeated for the right channel with front right, rear right, and center.

Using this adapter, the sound will be all around you, but it won't be surround sound. You won't hear space ships and laser blasts flying around you, you won't hear dialog coming directly from the TV, music from the left and right, and special effects from behind you, nor will you hear any of the other advantages of a real surround sound system. It recreates two really big stereo speakers. That is all. You will hear one set of sounds on the left speakers, and another set of sounds on the right speakers. The same sound that is in your FRONT left speaker will be coming out of your REAR left speaker. Your center speaker just outputs the sound from both front left and front right speaker. The exact same thing can be accomplished by just running a speaker wire from your left speaker to another speaker behind you. What you will hear is two distinctive channels (left and right), but duplicated and sent to the back speakers. Actual 5.1 surround consists of 6 individual channels, one per speaker, plus the subwoofer.

This device does not allow 5.1 surround sound. If you buy an expensive 5.1 speaker set, you are selling yourself short.

Now if you don't care about this and you are just trying to utilize your 5.1 setup on a stereo source, by all means, the product works great. But if you are trying to avoid buying an AV receiver, you will be strongly disappointed.

Perfect. It's guitar its not going to play different notes in different speakers/channels. Just wanted to know if it would only play from front/center or all of em. sweet thanks.

I'm not sure what you want to do.

You want to output sound to your sound card? Then I guess you can get 3x 3.5mm jacks then plug it to your sound card. I believe they're all the same, the color cables just make it easier to identify, they're basicly the same thing.
