Plextor today announced its new PlexEraser PX-OE100E CD/DVD destroyer. The new PlexEraser drive delivers a secure environmentally friendly method of destroying CD/DVD discs to security-conscious companies and individuals. The standalone unit operates without the need of a PC and is an alternative to disc shredders that are currently available. The Plextor PlexEraser PX-OE100E destroys CD/DVD discs by using a laser beam that kills off data recording portions of optical discs. Eight types of CD/DVD's are supported with the PlexEraser PX-OE100E drive including CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, and DVD+R DL discs. Smaller 8cm discs are also supported by the PlexEraser PX-OE100E as well. As far as timing goes, Plextor claims the average data destroying time is around three minutes for single-layer CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs while dual-layer discs take a little longer at around six minutes. The PlexEraser PX-OE100E is expected to ship to distributors next month with an M.S.R.P. of $249.99 USD. It will be available in North and South America and have a one year warranty with unlimited toll-free technical support.

its more fun to put a little sugar ontop of the cd when you microwave it.. hehehe.. sugar = highly reactive in microwaves.. go give it a shot.

What on earth is Plextor thinking of in designing, manufacturing and marketing such a product?

Not only is it superfluous... scratching, snapping, shredding and microwaving are quicker... but think about the "salary cost" of having an employee sitting there, slowly stuffing one CD at a time into such a machine.

I really am lost for words.

I think that the "product development strategists" at Plextor need some electric shock therapy. If this is their attempt at growing revenues, then the CEO should be fired.

Not to mention the ease at which data recovery services repair a physically cracked CD/DVD.

NOBODY can repiece a shredded CD especially if the data was encrypted or zipped, because the small amount of data than is left on each "shard", cannot be used. Byte-by-byte read of a shard under an electron microscope will reveal only a few hundred bytes of encrypted data that without directory or location references is meaningless.

You have ALL missed the point. Clearly, Dr Evil has taken over Plextor and is determined to use his frikkin "laser" in a household product.

Doomed I tell ya, DOOMED!!!

Dumbass product. Set fire to the CD's. Much cheaper, more fun, and it's family friendly. Get the whole family involved.
