Blue Screen Of Death!!!

GF's comp loads up saying windows was not shut down properly and ask me to start in safe mode or start normal well i tryed both ways and each time it gets to the windows loading screen then flashes a BLUE SCREEN for 1sec and monitor shuts off and and says no signal.


She has Windows XP 32bit

is it overclocked?

try testing with one stick of ram

or no extra cards (sound ethernet etc)

if that doesnt work then it was probably shut down improperly so often its wrecked. or has a really bad virus.

shove it in another rig do a virus scan on the disk. if that doesnt fix it. run a check disk. (from another system).....and finally if that doesnt work. grab the XP disk and do a repair install. if the repait install doesnt work a format is in order.

You can try a CMOS reset also by removing the battery for a minute.

Can you catch what the error code is on the bsod? Try taking eveything out but what is needed to boot the system (HDD, gfx, 1 stick of RAM) and go from there. If it still wont boot on the minimum pull the HDD and run it in another system and check it. Can you give us a run down of whats in the system?

this thread is worthless without more info. ie what components and what may have cased this bsod we can guess all day long but it will be a waste of time without more info

not really. hardware is hardware. and the steps to trouble shoot are the same unless the stop code pertains to something specific. since it reboots before he knows what it is the problem regardless of system specs is a guessing game.

Solaris has it right; we don't need specifics on the hardware. There are some good suggestions in this thread (like removing the HDD and checking it in another system, and removing all nonessential components to check if the problem persists then). But before doing anything, I highly recommend you check this article:

try using the system disk to fix the current OS

Does it have any important data on it? If it does, try popping the HDD into another PC to backup the data. Once youve done that, format the HDD, pop it back into her system and do a fresh install of XP

This is if all the other possible solutions fail btw

Guys! Its not the HDD. Its a malfunction hardware or faulty memory execution from the ram. In other terms, the pins on the Ram must have been touched. This may cause static electricity to destroy the important parts of the hardware.

Secondly, most drivers are faulty, please update them and give us a report.

Thirdly, please check your Bios revision. It might be outdated and you may want to update that to stabilize the CPU consumption and your hardware.

Hes getting the "the system wasnt shutdown properly" message, so in my books, its HDD/OS related.

Plus, he doesnt mention any 'beeps', which you usually get when trying to boot a system with faulty RAM etc

In my own experience, its not the OS. I've tried it before in my workplace. Reinstalling an OS may not solve BSOD. Its the driver / hardware issue.

P.S. When I joined the technician group in a company, I have to read this massive BOOK! It has 650 pages about computer problems! I have to remember all of them by hearth... oh well... life is harsh.

True, not all BSOD's are down to your OS (obviously) But to rule it out on this occasion is just silly. His girlfriend obviously hasnt been inside the case or overclocked anything. So my bet would be a bad shutdown has corrupted Windows.....plain and simple...it happens.

Also, if its a driver issue, which I dont think it is in this case because he cant even get Windows to boot in SAFE MODE, a format will get rid of any bad drivers

I dont find books on PC problems very good tbh. Because the second they are published they are already out of date due to advancing hardware and new programs being created daily.

I reckon so. And the trouble is he cant even get into Windows to roll it back a few weeks

Trust me, if she doesnt mind losing whatever is on the HDD, format it

If she has a dedicated graphics card (and onboard gfx is available) remove the card from the slot and see what happens when you power up.
