File sharing between Windows 7 and Windows XP

I have 2 computers... one is using windows 7, the other is on windows xp. I want to share a folder, but the share button is greyed out, so I have to use advanced sharing. I click on advanced sharing and check the box that says "share this folder" and click ok. Then I go to my XP machine, go to map network drive and point it to the folder, but when I try to access it, it says "Z:\ is not accessable. Access denied."

Uhh... how do I fix this so I can use my shared folder?

You need to set the permisions, both on the share section, and the security tab. Also, Windows 7 requires the user account has a password to access the computer from the network.

I was trying to do this a couple days ago and it wouldn't work no matter how I tried, if thats the solution... :laugh: I ended up putting Win7 on the other computer and using a Homegroup since my plan was to put Win7 on it eventually.

Yes, in fact it requires that the XP machine has a password, otherwise you got no chance of accessing it. I did it some weeks ago, had everything correct and couldn't fathom out why the 7 machine kept asking me a password to access the XP machine since the latter didn't have any. The solution was to create a pw for the XP machine.
