What's the card to look out for in 2010?

I think I am going to be looking for a new video card within the next few months. I'm willing to wait longer for better deals, as it's not a necessary upgrade at this point, but moreso future proofing I'm more asking what the schedule looks like for the next 6 months or so, to see when i should buy.

right now I have 2 4870s 512MB.they tear a bit on my tv , but other than that no problems.

so what should I be waiting for? Obviously I'm looking for DirectX11 and power comparable to 2x4870s. I'd also like to spend no more than $250USD if possible.

I have been with ATI for awhile, I switch back and forth every few years... but ATI is more and more affordable so that is a serious consideration.

I'd say a 5850 but thats a bit high for ur budget. The only other reasonable option is a 5770 which are around $200 but u would need 2 to match the power of ur CF 4870's.

The 5970 will be the most powerful ATI card for the next year or more.

nVidia is going to come out with some cards that are supposed to beat ATI's current offerings, but nobody knows for sure.

The 5970 is what you want if you really want to keep the ultra high-performance edge of your system.

+1 but is the OP willing to throw around that kind of money when he said no more than $250 if possible, a 5970 is more than 2x that

OP also wants power comparable to his 2x4870s, but he doesn't know that a 5870 only gets a little close to 2x4870s in power and it costs $400.

In other words, OP is dreaming. Unless when he says 'look out for' he means he's willing to buy it on Christmas, then it may cost $250.

yeah i say $250 , which means a little over three ... but even that makes me gag a little. $350+ is insanity(as if $300 isn't ...

so it looks for the time being , i should stay with my 4870s? I'm not going to get directx11, with the amount of power I have with my current Xfire ... at the price point i need within this year it sounds.

When Team Green ACTUALLY gets a DX11 part out then prices will go down and u will prob be able to get a 5850 around 300 dollars w/o taxes. BUT.....who knows when Nvidia will actually get a part out the door.

The 5870 does perform on par to 2x4870s most of the time, so get your 5870 at year's end, that's when all the DX11 games will start becoming popular anyway.

The only reason anything tears graphically with a computer is the fact that VSync is Disabled.

no definitely not. I have gone through EVERYTHING i can find trying to figure it out. but VLC and some games tear on my 42" @ 1080 ... xfire and all.... even at 720 but not as often or noticeable.

Anyway with Vsync on in game and/or forced by CCC it still tears. this is through 2 systems and 3 OSes, only constant being the 2 cards.

and i should note it is not horrible by any means. some people haven't been able to notice it but others have, and i certainly do. but even though it is not horrible, it's still not acceptable

if the HD6XXX series comes out this november(which it should) then the prices of mostly everything else on the market should drop and by the G300 launch the price of the HD5870 should be under 250 if AMD prices them like their old cards and do battle with Nvidia with low prices.

I think AMD will have a Refresh of the HD5K before any HD6Ks are launched, Most likely 6K will be next year but to think about everything, we dont need new video cards every year.

Yeah every estimate I've seen has the 6000 series set for 2011.

my advice, wait til nvidia releases there cards. the 5770/5850/5870 r going to drop a ton, i expect the 5770 at about 120-130. the 5850 at 200 and the 5870 at 250-300. also remember that the 5830 is expected to release in feb. should be around 230 in feb and after nvidia releases theirs cards id say about 170-180

grab a 5850 on newegg they can be had for $280 ish on top of that an overclocked 5850 will be equal to and even surpass a 5870 thus he can get 1 gig of video memory usefully at a higher res and since a 5850 overclocked can spank a 5870 means its also on par with a 4870x2 / 4870 1gig crossfire you guys seem to forget the op has 2 512mb cards mean not nearly as fast as the 1 gig cards past 1680x1050

i say grab a 5850 overclock it and then be happy

yea i just looked at the roadmap on amd's site, the Radeon HD 6870 is supposed to launch about the same time as AMD's next high end cpu, next year in Q1, . . . . . oh wells,

i still say 5850 for $300 he gets a card that cosumes 1/2 the power of the 2 4870s and the 5850 will overclock FURTHER then a 5870 and the heavens bench thread shows the 5850s showing up the 5870s in more then a few screens $300 may be a bit much but you can always sell the 4870 512mb afterwards to recoup some money

Since you are willing to wait, just wait about 1 month after the release of nvidia cards then choose what seems to be the best for you at that price point.
