it needs to be active.
passive only works if you want 2 screens - it converts the DVI signal to DP, however when you use three monitors on 5K cards there is only two timings signals* sent, and you need three if you arent using a native DP screen.
short version: you MUST have an active adaptor for eyefinity, or a native DP screen.
