Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
here are things you should look at.

-bus width
-memory amount
-voltage
-clocks
-bios size

clocks can vary infact it might be why you choose to flash. same with voltage they kind of go hand in hand with clocks. you need to be careful however and make sure your cooler can handle it. bios size memory amount and bus width cannot be different. that will result in a brick. Also things you may not see. different manufacturers may use different chips. different chips may have different latency's and timings. flash with too high of a clock speed and the chips may not be able to take it. rule of thumb. make sure your card can clock higher than the clocks of the bios you are going to flash. this reduces the risk of a failed flash. These things are all things to consider and all of these things are part of the risk in flashing. Be their no confusion Flashing is dangerous and risky. it is upto the owner to decide if it is worth it.

I noticed that there is a new 2010 HD5870 Vapor-X bios in the database, would this bios work on a stock 5870 or is the hardware(besides the cooler) actually different?

I wouldn't bother. Different fan settings, possibly a different PCB. You won't get any performance gains. MSI Afterburner will work with any 5850 bios and you have fan control, voltage control and everything else. There's no point to flashing to this bios.

wouldnt the only advantage be that your card after a bios flash like that would allow your card to go into power saveing mode (down clock) as compared to o/cing it with afterburner? I might be totaly way off here , but just a thought? Dragon

For that you need to make a custom bios using RBE. The Toxic bios doesn't allow for much more overclocking and may not be compatable with a reference card at all.

Yep I was more wondering about the hardware compatibility vs the two boards. My 5870 runs perfectly for 99% of my needs, gaming and every day use is totally stable, but it suffers from the extended monitor + OC = too low idle clocks issue that many folks are experiencing, I keep expecting that ATI will fix this up in an official bios update, and the toxic bios appears to be the newest version for 5870 out there at the moment...after flashing RBE modified bios for several generations of ATI cards I guess I'm just getting lazy and wanting a factory solution. :)

I flashed my vanilla XFX 5870 to the Vapor-X (rev 2) 12.019 bios without issue.

The Vapor-X fan profile works a lot better with the stock cooler as an added bonus.

You get much better cooling for only a slight increase in noise :)

Edit:

RBE version 1.25 is being worked on which would allow a beautiful marriage between the latest bug free bios and the unlocked GPU and Vmem clocks of an earlier release ;)

Good stuff :)

All we need to get now is an core / memory unlocked clocks version of 019 ;)

The author of RBE nearly cracked it today but it is not quite there.... maybe later on this week... more testing required!

:respect:

You were right on about the temps, I was pretty surprised to see the min-max improvements with the Vapor-X bios.
