Replacing thermal paste on a hd5870 with mx-3

hey guys I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to pop open my 5870 and put soem of my new mx-3 (arctic cooling) I bought for my cpu? When i reapplied it to my cpu going from as-5 to mx-3 I used to idle at 46-47 and not iam at 37-39 ,and thats o/ced to 3.9. Not that my temps are bad on my 5870 but If i could get them even lower it would be a benifit ...no? Is it a big job tearing it appart?,has anyone done this on a 5850 or 5870 here yet? Or would you just leave it as it is?

other people have doen the same thing and supposedly reported drops from 2-5C .. i am skeptical though.. but i think you have nothing to loose if you use care

Your biggest issue will be making sure that the thermal pads come off the memory chips w/o tearing them off.

Also you might make sure you're not voiding your warrant yif that matters at all to you.

im leaving my 5850 as is, it feels like they did a good job with it, but u r only applying paste on the gpu so that might change things in ur favor due to the better quality of mx-3 vs whatever is in there already

Yes.

I did it with my leftover MX-2 and my 4870. Not really a noticeable difference. Maybe the fan spins at a lower speed to keep temps. Oh well, it's helping me use up my MX-2 so I can buy MX-3 and do it all over again!! :rockout:

I have to say mx-3 is REALY GOOD there was a night to day difference from as-5 , yeah I forgot about those darn thermal pads. esspecialy if they do get torn or ripped, then I will be hooped! Might need to look into buying soem thermal pads before i venture into this, I have some real thin themal pads I ordered along time ago when i stuck some heatsings onto an old nvidia card but I cant remember where they are ,or if they will be good anymore,

only thing Ive ever smelt burning was my left leg , when i was 6 years old my older bros. accidently threw a can of gas after it caught on fire my way...or I hope it was an accident lol 3rd and 4th degree burns up to my knee...OUCH

It's not tearing the thermal pads themselves you have to worry about, it's taking the memory chips with them when you separate the card and sink. GPU Ram needs to stay where it is. :laugh:

did it the same as always, but the problem might of been that the as-5 was about 5-6 years old and wasnt pliable like i thought it should be

AS-5 also require a long curing time which sucks.
Anyways, pretty much anything is better than the thermal crap on sapphire cards.

yeah ive heard about the length to cure, I had it on for about 2 months I would say. as well iam very temped to pull apart the 5870 tommorow and slap on some the the mx-3 If I do I will post some beches of before and after, I would honestly think that it would be better,

I wish I would of looked closer at it when i was putting it in to see actually what was involved in doing it, I know I could do, it just worried about the thermal pads, also the warranty, as there might be an anti-tamper sticker or something like that ,Ill pull it out anyways tommorow and have a better look

lol, thats silly..(about the cure baloney, if you apply it correctly the temp is really close after a month compared to a fresh coat)

I have used a bunch of AS-5 MX-2 and 3 and they are very close..

To me the main reason for switching to MX2/3 is non conductivity

the newer GPUs are done a lot better than before, the old ones were often a big fricken mess.

I lap and use MX 2 on every GPU cooler I have.

Just remove the cooler carefully you should be ok

I think a safe thickness is 1mm (but I would measure with a feeler gauge just to be sure as most cards coolers are different)

i laugh at anti tamper stickers ... nothing a little super glue wont fix :toast:

saved me a 285 when that broke haha

was water cooling it and had to put the original HS back on and send it back ... accepted RMA

lol thermal pads? who needs em. i took my 7800GTX apart and put AS5 on it and the memory chips, thou threw away the pads and just had hte thermal paste between the heatsink and mem chips. don't have a single problem with it.
