at least on steam you can play while offline! this is bullshit! my connection goes off and on frequently sometimes due to my cable company (charter/comcast) being ibasules! they cut me off one day thinking im stealling movies/software then turn me back on because whoever is stealing the crap still steals it while I'm not connected though they assure me the theft is coming from my ip address which is obviously isnt because when they shut me off the dude keeps downloading! so say once or twice a month I get this crap and I have to deal with it unless I want DSL 3meg which is more like 1.5meg actually! DAMN IT! screw ubisoft! are they implementing this via patch to older games?? boy I hope not

well if you have a bad connection and you want the latest game from ubisoft, it just give you another reason to grab a copy from a friend and use a hack. Steam has been hacked using workaround many times, i could provide proof but this is not allowed here as we all know.

Zuxxez made it right with Earth2160. Input a key, activate via Internet, and if you don't have internet, call a toll free number with BRUCE WILLIS' voice guiding you trough the activation process. Unlimited numbers of installs and activations possible. And no internet required. That worked very well.

Tropico 3 is the same way but apparently, the serial system is buggy (pops up later even if the key has previously been validated).

No disk is required to play Tropico 3 and I doubt even an internet connection is needed after the install has been activated. This is the way all games should be.

Never happened to me (the serial thing). Afaik Tropico uses the Internet only for self-patching. And multiplayer. Is there multiplayer? I forgot, haven't played in a while, it won't run on Intel GMA

A kind of multiplayer as i believe it just compares scores against other peoples schools. Shame really .

It never happened to me either. I'm just relaying what others have said. XD

Yeah, you can copy somewhere else after it has finished downloading and Tropico 3 closes to run it. It downloads to:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Tropico 3

It doesn't have multiplayer--only downloads custom scenarios and scores for missions.

That's reasonable.

it's extremely easy if you know what to do (have the right tools). for the release groups, such steam releases are not as clean as the typical no-cd approach, that's why you see them only on steam-exclusives

The DRM's copy of the game that cost you £30, but makes you take your cap in your hand and plead with the software company everytime you want to play it.

These DRMs are getting worse and worse. Indeed, I have bought a game DVD that I have never actually installed on my system. I think it was FEAR2 and it wouldn't let me get STEAM onto my system. The solution was just to download the bootleg....played it with no problems.

I'm hardly surprised it's been cracked so quickly. Nice one. I boycotted Ubisoft the moment I heard about this stupid and draconian DRM.

In fact I boycott any game with securom or similar crap. Steam DRM is the only one I've found vaguely acceptable and that one's borderline: why the fuck can't I resell my games!! It's because they're fucking greedy, that's why.

If that's how it's going to be, then to hell with their game. I just plain won't buy or play it. It's not that I don't have an Internet connection (obviously), it's that firstly, I just plain don't want this crap constantly using my connection, and secondly, my connection is sometimes unstable. I can be without Internet access for a few hours at a time now and then, and while it would only occasionally be a problem, I have other games to play that will work when this one doesn't, so screw it.

The real losers are the developers, they keep making these DRM systems more and more hard to use for the casual user and they always get hacked in like 1 day and the pirates don't even have to deal with them which causes people not to buy their game because of this pathetic excuse of DRM most of the developers more than likely don't even want, its a damn shame.
