Why exactly are you wasting resources on 2003?

Why exactly are you wasting resources on 2003?

Because by default? It installs in a "WorkStation" mode... when you need server componentry, you add it, as is needed (IF needed).

And, when I need server tools like IIS? And I do?? I add them... albeit on another box here which houses SQLServer 2005 & IIS6.x, for development practice purposes (a lot to learn on .NET for me, & I try new stuff everyday, even if only small things - they begin to "add up" for my learning about it).

Windows Server 2003's actually VERY light when installed in default configuration, & is a rewrite of the codebase for their NT-based OS' (not complete I would say @ least, but correction of 'potential mistakes' that were known in XP - this is how I understood it).

Windows Server 2003's also from what I understand, the foundation code for VISTA (what VISTA code was based on initially) & the most stable/secure offering there is from MS in the way of NT-based OS', until VISTA actually comes out.

E.G.-> One such example is its version of IE6.x - it comes with an "Enhanced Security Configuration" by default (yes, you can do the same pretty much by turning off a lot of options in the XP version of IE6.x too, but this just does it for you right-off-the-bat).

APK

P.S.=> It is proving itself more secure than XP today, as we speak/write here, check it (Windows FireWall ICS vulnerability is known & out today, in that it can be turned off remotely... possible on XP, but NOT on Windows Server 2003):

New Windows attack can kill firewall

http://www.networkworld.com/news/2006/103006-new-windows-attack-can-kill.html?page=2

"Windows XP appears to be the only platform affected by this attack, which has not been successfully reproduced on Windows Server 2003, Reguly said."

There've been others too, that's just an ABSOLUTELY CURRENT example... apk

Same one we saw w/ Vista.

Unfortunately, if you don't set it up right it will spy on you while you use the bathroom.

Also it won't play my videos I made using x264 codec (HDTV).

By default VLC Media Player plays everything I have ever tried and it doesn't try to peep in on me. Which is a good thing because I can't go when someone's watching.

I will try to install codec packs later for WMP11 and see if that fixes my problem. Until then I will stick w/ VLC.

God Bless Open Source,

I feel your pain man. I finally just switched my main machine back to XP because I was frankly tired of XP getting everything. Server 2003 is a very nice OS, and contrary to what people think, by default it is very light on resources(better then XP since a lot of the bloated services are turned off by default to improve performance). I still remember trying to get WMP10 to install on 2003 before it was offically released for it in SP1. What a pain, but it was possible, but that was before all the WGA crap. Getting video card drivers was a real pain in the ass too, for a very long time since ATi and NVidia didn't want to support Server 2003 for some stupid reason.

Ah, no "pain" really... just some 'minor disappointment'... these aren't things we all can't live w/ out... but updates usually are UPDATES/UPGRADES... nice to have the 'latest/greatest' & all that & not be 'left out' etc..

Oh, I'll stick by & stay w/ 2003, because imo @ least? It's the "perfect blend" of Windows 2000 & XP features mostly & is the most secure OS available from MS currently, in final form.

It's just odd MS doesn't push out new versions of things like IE7 & WMP 11 as fast as they do for XP, but then again, XP tends to me imo, a beta test bed for many things... especially since it is the most utilized PC OS.

Server 2003 is a very nice OS, and contrary to what people think, by default it is very light on resources(better then XP since a lot of the bloated services are turned off by default to improve performance).

True... & even MORESO if you add in SCW (security configuration wizard).

IE7's been a PAIN to me in that capacity - I gave up on it, even though there are supposedly 'workarounds' for it on Windows Server 2003... I don't NEED it, but would like it in place.

I have yet to have problems w/ NVidia though, as far as drivers for this OS "flavor" though... ever since its release actually, I have always had drivers for it.
