I will be happy to see it in my PC. Just have to decide on a good x58 mobo. It is between EVGA and Gigabyte.

You are so right. My photo editing will not improve in speed (Capture NX2) but my chrunching might get a small boost ;)

Looking forward to see a dedicated 980X chruncher in our team. :rockout:

WTF! seriously?? another $1K cpu. Whats up with this. You can bet that AMD's 6core will not cost this damn much. Basically if you want a cpu that is no better in games and only marginally better in multi threaded benchmarks then blow 1K this is insane and the even funnier part is that the price will not budge. Proof of that?? the i7 975 is how much?? 1K the same price it launched at, the QX9770 and QX9650 were how much when they EOL'd?? 1K rediculous

EDIT and dont give me that "oh dont buy it if you dont like it" bullcrap because I wont buy it and fact is it costs intel very little extra to unlock a multiplier definately not $400-$500 extra that for damn sure, reason they keep doing it is because people keep paying it plain and simple if AMD thought they could constantly charge that for cpu's they would like the TWKR if they thought they could do that type of stuff every new cpu they would. /rant

All extreme Intel CPU's are 1K, it's nothing new. The price will budge when a higher end extreme CPU comes along (like the 965 and the 975).

I know that but it doesnt make it right just for intel to go in and mess with the multi lock does it?? eventually someone some where will find a way to unlock any intel cpu then intel will be in big trouble kind of like the AMD unlocking of cores etc

Unless something changed I believe it's physically impossible for that to happen.

In a state of flux...
Why charge $500 when someone will pay $1000?

Supply and demand.

Either way, this CPU no doubt has some huge balls and all the power anyone in the personal computing sector should need for a LONG time. :)

I think this will be replacing my Q9650. I hear there is nothing on the Intel road map until 2011. Maybe a Non EE 6 core, but that will be released much later.

I highly doubt they will not release non-Extreme versions of 6-core CPUs within the next few months.

Releases like the 980X are for Intel to squeeze mad profit off silly fanboys so they can then release their sanely priced processors.

The problem here IS the lack of a 6 core non-EE part. I think it's just stupid. You are just shutting out a LARGE percentage of enthusiast by not offering something to the masses. It honestly pisses me off.

Looking forward to 32nm Westmere high-end performance for 2010

Just picked up my Intel Core i7 Extreme 980X Gulftown six-core from the Micro Center in Southern California this afternoon. Excellent launch-day prices ($999), outstanding customer service, convenient retail locations. What more could you ask for? :D :D

Upgraded from a Core i7 Extreme 965 that also I got from Micro Center the day before Nehalem launch day (November 16, 2008). Just sold it on eBay a couple days ago. According to a recent conversation I had with Anand over Twitter, this hexa-core processor should be the first Extreme Edition from Intel that's actually worth buying!

The Core i7 980X Review: Intel's First 6-Core Desktop CPU

Product Code: BX80613I7980X

Pack Date: February 24, 2010

Batch Number: 3003A957

Looking forward to some great experiences with the 32nm Westmere generation over the next year! The future looks bright for Intel regardless of whether the Tick-Tock cadence was delayed by a quarter, and I am confident in the company's continued engineering efforts for unique innovation in a world that now depends highly on the success of technological advancement. ;)

In other news, I just received my Sapphire Radeon HD 5970s back from RMA the other day. Long story short (full story here) - after two months of hardware and driver testing, I concluded that both cards were hardware defective right out of the box. All in all, this weekend is going to be one hell of a fun experience, and some of my good enthusiast buddies are welcome to come over. I'll post some benchmarks as soon as they're ready. ;)
