Overclocking ASUS EAH 5850???

Rumour has it that that the ASUS EAH 5850 is a great overclocker.

I read a long length article about the extra performance that can be gained from this card, all at fairly low temperatures and fan speeds.....however I cannot for the life of me find it again using google (and I have tried extensively).

Can anyone point in me in the right direction?

Hmm. don't know of the article, but all reference 5850's are the same. Some have Quimonda ram and others have Samsung ram, with the Samsung being the better of the two. Overclocking tools like MSI Afterburner will work (voltage control, clocks, fan) with any reference 5850. I'm currently using two Diamond 5850's and they would be considered great clockers. 1000/1250 w/ 1.2v

What fan speed do you set to acheive that monstrous o/c and if you were someone who still wanted thier graphics cards to work after 2 years, would that be quite a safe overclock?

that is definately a great safe overclock that voltage is super low and the voltage is what really matters not the clocks

I done a copy cat of erocker's overclock.

Having spent the last 90 minutes on online BFBC2, HWmonitor tells me that my max GPU temp was 78C. Is this is an acceptable temp for the 5850 card, i.e. a temp that is not going to have any undue wear and tear on the card?

Don't copy other people's overclock, different cards clock differently. Experiment instead. General rule of thumb says that the hotter you run, the shorter lifespan your wares have. I think 78C is pretty hot, I would reduce it to less than 70, but expert is required.

Hey, my old 4870 idled at 78C and under load for long durations it would hit 85 or even 90C. It has lasted almost 2 years and is still good......but maybe different GPU's have diff temps....I just dont know....so much conflicting advice on the net its hard to determine between expert advice and opinion.

Perhaps erocker can tell us what is temps are under load over a period of time?

dunno about 1.2v. The speed decreases on higher voltage (at least on my ASUS card).

For example memory at 1100Mhz is as fast as 1200Mhz (you can test this with multiple ways, but lets start with PCI-Express testing). As what goes to core core is stable at 1.087v at 850Mhz if you raise the voltage to 1.2v at 850Mhz the processing speed actually drops. Meaning something isn't correct.

now 1000Mhz Core with 1.2v I cannot imaging that this would actually be the best scenario of OC'ing this core as the 850Mhz already shows weakness in these voltages. I'd say what ever 1.16xv can maximum do is the max there is and no don't think voltage is everything as someone said.

most of quote for wrong message there. Never the less yeah 70-80 is pretty nice in fact I got pretty hefty cooling unit here and it's still on 77-79c[on absolute load].

what goes to temperatures. I am 2 inces from ripping the 5850 apart because this idiotic plastic cover(the ASUS / Stock one) keeps more air out than works as it's ment to as 'wind' tunnel.

This as my old 9800 GTX design PSU at bottom > card straight above that 120mm fan & the blastic sawed exactly from end of the air directing to GPU metal should work pretty damn well. Although on Crossfire setup this is horrible idea as then it would close the air again back in between the cards.

I noticed when I was edging my card up towards erockers clock, when I was at 850MHz, I got a big lift in 'minimum frames' (I have v-sync on so I don't know about max) in a gaming stress test that I was using. The difference was like from 40 to 47 minimum FPS, so this is certainly an improvement well worth having. When I hit erockers clock though, my min frames in this particular benchmark were only at 49....not the most fantastic reward for pushing card right to it's limit.

Anyways, you recommend a lower voltage of 1.16 combined with the highest clock that runs stable?

This matches the scaling I got recently with a friend's 5850, 950 mhz @ 1224. Seems for a lot of these cards it's a fight to get to 1000 mhz because voltage starts to have a negative effect the higher you go, but this threshold seems to be different for every card. I think erocker is pretty lucky to have two cards that both do 1000 Mhz at only 1200.

Mine do that.....but I get 78C on the GPU under load.
