This is necessary given that the future Sandy Bridge processors will be rolled-out on LGA1155 sockets, as opposed to the existing LGA1156 socket used for the Lynnfield and Clarkdale Core i3 and i5 (and also i7-8xx) processors.

There were rumours on the net i guess it is now official ,usual intel milking every penny from customers pocket ,no usb 3.0 at 2011 and probably later new chipsets with usb 3.0 .

Im not sure if new Sandy bridge cpus would work on old mobos even socket did not changed .This is what i most like at amd ,they keep compatible as possible as .

+1
AMD has been using the same socket for there new CPUs and chipsets since AM2. The only time they really changed anything that had to do with compatibility was AM3.IRRC the AM3 socket still is the same physically but not electronically

atm AMD has the superior motherboard platform, why? PCIe 2.0 all the way on ALL ports, on intel you get PCIe 1.0 that realy bottleneckes USB 3.0/SATA 6Gbps to 250 MB/s not 500 MB/s like PCIe 2.0 gives you and PCIe 2.0 only on Graphics slot

this was futher solified with AMD's 890GX that has now a pure PCIe 2.0 all around the chipset even between NB and SB ;)

i love my 790FX+SB750 motherboard why? i can put in so many USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps PCIe x1 cards i want and get the speed i expected from the controllers

here is a comparison of intels chipsets when it comes to SATA 6Gbps, keep in mind AMDs Driver is realy new and inmature atm given that marvell has had 6 months in the public with their drivers and amd has less than a month, but you can see it clearly has more in it like anand says, but back to my point notice the lame speed you get with PCIe 1.0 ;O
