i've read about it/seen one for sale.

It could work really well, but only if the SSD drive you're using has no stutter bugs/performance issues, otherwise it'll slow down the HDD.

I'm thinking it only affects the first 30GB on the hdd (in my case) which would be the OS mostly, correct?

no it just uses it as a read/write buffer it seems. 'most recently used' 30GB, not 'first 30GB'

the only way to guarantee your important files stay fast would be to partition it, and that negates the whole point of the device.

Seen it, read about it and dropped it.

Caching your files for fast access on an SSD is great and all, but only doing that once on bootup is ridiculous.
If it cached on-the-fly, I might have gotten it.

Nah, some defraggers will let you specify.

This product is too much work for me. I think I'd rather just run a JBOD setup, and pick and choose where I install my progs, SSD or regular.

Great idea, but needs a little more automation.

true, i was thinking that myself. but even so, you ahve no control over it outside of that... it'd be easier to just leave it all on the SSD.


You might as well just run JBOD raid with one SSD, one regular drive - its pretty much the same thing.

Benchmarks:

Vantage (CPU)
PCM05 (HDD and CPU)
HD Tune
CineBench (CPU)
Atto


Vantage -





A nice increase in performance with the ssd enabled.

PCM05 -





The ssd blistered thru PCM05 compared to the hdd alone.

HD Tune -





The ssd still shows improvement but notice the sharp drop...I believe this is because of the small size of the ssd. You make the call.

CineBench -





Unsure of the CineBench results...

Atto -





The Atto test revealed a gain for the ssd, tho not as great as expected.

Conclusions:

I am not sure if I included the correct tests or not. There does seem to be gains with the ssd "piggy backed" to the hdd. Is it worth the effort? I will let other's more knowledgable than myself make that decision. I do like how the ssd wakes up the always sluggish Win7 OS...I think I will be using this on my upcoming micro build. :thumbsup:
