Hey lads.

I need a new DVD-ROM as the one I am using won't read CD's anymore.

I bought this HD camcorder which has a lot of applications and drivers to use with the PC..but it's a CD rom so I am unable to use the programs that came with it.
Also the drivers that were auto installed from windows barely works...lots of times it just crashes and I have to take the battery out and put it back in!

Anyway!

What is the best DVD drive there is to buy?
I want an internal one and not external!
No blu-ray either as I don't need it at all.

Cheers!

Just take your pick. Go with a brand you trust. They are all very similar, just don't waste your money.

I have been using LG for years as they sell there's cheap.
Just..this is the second drive that stopped working with CD's with LG!!!!!!

So I rather just get away from LG now :p

I do not know of any other brands when it comes to drives.
Like...who are the best??
Would SONY be good tho?

MoonPig: It does not matter who sells to Ireland. All I want is the product and let me worry about where to get it :p
I like that drive tho!

Oh that looks impressive!
The access times for CD's are 110ms and DVD's at 130ms. So far that's the best ive seen :p

It also has plenty of nice features and great read/write times.
Can't go wrong with that one!
Thanks Choppy!

I always go for Pioneer m8. But LiteOn are a pretty safe bet also. A little word of warning. Ive had a couple of Samsung 'Super Writemaster' drives that have been funny with certain media brands :( I couldnt install windows 7 using them, the disc would just stop reading. So I popped a Pioneer in and problem solved ;)

Yeah, it was really strange. My installation disc, that I know is perfect, would go from 1% installed to 100% in about 2 seconds  Which meant a SHIT LOAD of data was missing from the install. It did this to me twice, on 2 different systems, both brand new SATA Samsung Super Writemaster DVDRWs. Each time, I opened up the system, popped my spare SATA Pioneer in and jobs a goodun :rockout:

I sign choppys recommendation, I've been using a SAMSUNG SH-S182M (the real name/model is TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M), that costed about 35€, for 2+ years without an issue after an LG one, that costed almost 180€, decided that it would only read CD's from that point on.
Plus they release alot of firmware updates to solve any issues and in most cases improve the drives performance.
IMHO, Pioneer and Phillips are the only two brands that stand against Samsung (and probably win) on this area, but, in most cases, they are way expensive, price-quality/performance go Samsung.

A fw upgrade may have solved the problem I had with 2 Sammy drives ;) I had a Sammy (Toshiba-Samsung) drive in my laptop and it was great, until I killed it with over use lol

HookeyStreet: I think my LG one died because I used "crappy" DVD-Rs on it and they were not perfect, (some point on the DVD was heavier than the rest, probably no DVD is "perfect") and the rotor probably got misaligned/loosened a bit and the drive just couldn't read DVD's anymore (it tried to but no luck). Then I saw that Samsung had provided a balancing system for this issue (Tilt Compensation or somethin') never had an issue with cheap DVDs anymore.

Irish_PXzyan: good deal, and I think that you can "speed hack" that drive to read/write at an even higher speeds :D (although be very careful if you do).
Hope the drives meets your needs.
