Hardware deprivation - Need something new to play with

Well, I've been away from my Desktop for nearly 3 months now, and won't have it back for a month and a half.

Having the inability to play with hardware is driving me nuts, and I need something new to play with and enjoy over the summer. No, I'm not just trying to spend money. I really need some hardware to play with haha.

Was thinking about the following:

Was reading about the release of the new SSD coming out very soon. Was considering getting one or even possibly two and putting them in a RAID. I really like the idea, but I'm still not too keen on the prices.

Other option was possibly a slim PS3 to hookup to my HDTV to enjoy it fully, and play some sports games. I really enjoy FIFA, NHL, NCAA Football, etc. Also some of the exclusives are enticing.

I need to get my hands on something in 2 months... What else is coming out? Hmmmm..

EDIT: I don't need Core i7 or Fermi, I don't care much for signatures and my house already has a great heating system in it for the winter.

get a core i7 so you can post benchmarks everyday and join the big epeen club, dont think logic or worry about the cost, its all about having a 3% faster cpu while paying twice as much.

WD just came out with a 600GB raptor drive... not very fun but it is something new.

Maybe you should invest in a phase change setup... it's really the best (as far as temps go) practical cooling system, and you'll never have to worry about temps... your only worry will be voltage then, hah

Hmmm.. I have enough storage I think.. 1.64TB.. If I went for a hard drive, I'd probably go for a SSD for sure for some speed.

Adding a new hardware device (while fun) will not satiate that harware craving for long.
What I mean is that if you get a couple of SSDs, install, RAID, bench, how long does that take? A couple of days? Then the itch is back.

Start from scratch and build a wirelessly controlled robot to get you beer out of the 'fridge.
That should remove the itch for quite some time ... and if not, at least you don't have to get your own beers.

Seeing how I use more than 1 computer for more than just gaming I find your statement is complete ignorance. I have an AMD 630 Quad Rig (even though its not a Phenom) my i7 dances around it.

There are more purposes for computers other than gaming, IMO running VM's with an i7 is allot smoother than in running it with a Phenom or an Athlon Quad, I have always used AMD but I switched to the core series when they were released because Intel was offering the power I needed. AMD CPU's have purposes as well, as they can be easily used in cheap rigs but when it comes down to power and performance AMD just doesn't cut it for me.

I am not sure where your pulling the 3% figure but its complete garbage.

If you have not done it before, watercooling would be a fun summer project. Learning something new like that is a thrill. Would be cheaper than buying lots of new hardware.

this. I didnt buy hardware for a long time because I was putting my WC together. It was cool stuff.

I am not arguing with your statement. Just keep it civil. You could simply ask for him to supply links to support his opinion. When the name calling starts, the threads go away and that does not help TPU in any way.

. Yeah when I get bored I modify what I already have. Submerged a PIII machine in vegetable oil 2 summers ago. Problem was I had no idea that hard drives don't like that, pressure difference and all.

I still say phase change. Buy a phase change unit once, and never worry about cooling ever again. No heat output could even make you squint your eyes... not even the gtx480.

From what I have seen on TPU, phase change ruins lives... err computers.

phase change is basically a super extreme water cooling setup... but it's a permanent solution.
