Hey guys, I know this topic has been abused but I really need a new mouse, ftm I am using an a4 tech x6 mouse, yeah its getting old and the buttons are a pain to press, especially the middle mouse, I have to use it extensively @ work. I have done a bit of homework and have a shortlist :

1. logitech mx518
2. razer deathadder

I'm leaning towards the mx518, since its cheap but I'd like to know how it holds up today, since its an old mouse (2005) So for those using it, is it still up to the standards of todays mice? I've also learnt that the new 1800 dpi one's have some issues (dunno if its true or not, just came across it)

Concerning the deathadder, it doesn't have big cons, but I really don't like the way razer mice age (since I'm gonna use it for some time, I don't change mice like socks) ;)

If you have suggestions for alternatives in the $50 range, please feel free to state em. :toast: but price is an important factor.

My buddy had an mx518 and loved it, he wore it out after a couple years of service. I'm on just past a year with my G5, and it's been a great gaming mouse. Granted it only goes up to 2000dpi, it straight rocks...solid, built well and durable. I vote for the G5 in that price range in all honesty, or a G9 if you can step up the investment a bit...that's supposed to be one helluva gaming mouse. I've tried the 518, and I decided on the G5, for me it just worked out better, still looks good, and works perfectly.

How is the g5 better than the mx518? I'd love to have a g9, but I don't know if it'll be adequate for me, ergonomics wise. I prefer to have a mouse that helps me with my palm (extensive use) and anyways, its outta my budget, think its like $100! I looked at the g5, and sadly, there ain't anyones in my zone. Anyways, dpi isn't so much important for me, the one I have is a 800 dpi mouse, so...

G5 is a step up from the 518, and the G500 is a step up again.

i have all three of those mice here right in front of me.

the main advantage i see, is that they all have the same basic shape - the features just go up every generation (optical to laser, adjustable speed, Gkey software/free scroll wheel)

So basically, what cons do you see with it?

G5 is a step up from the 518, and the G500 is a step up again.

i have all three of those mice here right in front of me.

the main advantage i see, is that they all have the same basic shape - the features just go up every generation (optical to laser, adjustable speed, Gkey software/free scroll wheel)

That would be kind of you if you sent me all 3 mice, so I can have a personal review, don't worry, you'll hear from me again! :D

Seriously though, the g5 isn't in stock where I buy my parts and the g500's price is roughly in the $75. Is the step from optical to laser such a great leap? (heard its better than laser)

518 is optical, G5 and 500 are laser.

The deal is that laser works on more surfaces, and has less 'jitter' on bad surfaces - that one hair or crumb on your mousepad/desk wont cause the mouse to spaz and twitch all over the place.

IMO the G500 is worth every penny, especially for a work mouse - you didnt specify what kind of work you do, but the sensitivity control and customisation are awsome. You could set it so that in your PDF reading software that the 'speed' buttons on the mouse controlled zoom levels instead, for example.

Ok so basically the g500 is steps ahead of the mx518 then? Think I'll fork some more cash for it , plus it looks nice, and like I say earlier and which you point out too, has the same shape and form as the mx518, which I've rather grown fond of, looking at countless reviews. What about the deathadder though, anyone?

For work, and if you don't mind a heavy mouse, the wireless MX1100 is a good option.

It isn't good for gaming, though, since it is too heavy.

I had the MX700, which is the wireless version of the 518, then i got the deathadder and have yet to even want to get a different mouse, i just love this thing. Also got mine on sale for $25 (was on clearance at circuit city way back when). Have also used microsofts, sidewinder... has a nice click feel, but i still prefer the deathader.

What do you love and hate with the mouse? Does it age well? (coating on the mouse)

what kind of work do you do?

Same as yours! You sure know that clicking a lot is important.

I'm starting to really like the price of the deathadder, its merely $60, $15 cheaper than the g500, so for me, its gaining some popularity ;)

I was talking about the other job moderator ROFL!

I seriously hate when buying a new piece of hardware, I'm so picky, even after reading a 1000's of reviews I'm still undecided! I guess that's what we love with tech!

So for now, my shortlist is this :

1. g500
2. deathadder

I need help!!!

Throwing in my vote for the G5.

Like it much more over my 518, and I just prefer the feel and the grip.

Not sure how much it is now, I believe I payed $80..
