Is this 5850 exceptional?

This is probably the best OC I've seen on a graphics card using the reference cooler (although it loses stability under full load at >~1015Mhz or over 1.3v, possibly due to restrictions in the amount of power it can draw from two 6-pin sockets and the motherboard).
I advised a friend to get one and try overclocking and his won't stay stable at even 900Mhz without being taken all the way up to 1.28v, mine is happy at 1.15v at 900Mhz.

So, has anyone else here had great results when pushing their 5850 to the limit?

Yes, that is quite good. Your friend may have different ram chips (Quimonda vs. Samsung) on their card, are they overclocking that as well?

I flashed my Sapphire 5850 1GB reference card to 1060 core/1270memory @ 1.35V and it runs 100 percent stable and cool :D.

How are the benchmark increases looking from stock to that o/c?

I didn't ran yet benchmarks like 3dMark because I'm not a fan of them. I ran Furmark for stability in high load and tested with fraps the increase in games, and overall its performance increase is somewhere between 35% and 40% which is simply amazing. I'll post some pictures with results in games and 3dmark when I have some free time;). Because the temps are pretty low, I'm even looking to a possible overclock to 1.4V, but I think that's a little insane :)). And on top of that I don't have a software to apply 1.4V to the core without flashing the bios. One option would be Smart Doctor from Asus but for that I need to flash my card with an Asus bios and I want to avoid that. And another reason I didn't ran benchmarks like 3dmark is because right now I have a shitty cpu (Athlon X2 6000+). I'll upgrade to a phenom 965 BE or i5 750 in a couple of weeks. You realize that the increase in performance will be bigger , because right now the card is bottlenecked. And even bottlenecked, I think that these results put the card somewhere near the gtx 480...

Between Qimonda and Samsung, it's the Samsung chips that OC better.

Screenie or it's not true. It needs to at least pass a Kombuster or Heaven benchmark.

I don't know if I would call the OPs 5850 exceptional but it's definitely a strong card and might be better than average. I'm running mine at 920/1200 with 1.15v and I can leave the fan on on auto while never breaking 68c. I didnt even try to push mine passed 950mhz yet.

I'll get you one on Friday (I'm away all week) :). I have a screen of 1GHz on Furmark Extreme Burning Mode if you're interested. However, I didn't mentioned it's not stock cooling *runs*.

After reading this, Im gonna overclock my HD5870 way higher than 900mhz and 1300MHZ!
