I know most of us are aware that RAM prices have been going uppppp and uppppp......whats the story behind it??? i dont see what could be in a little stick of memory that would make the prices double in the past 6 monts or so.....i know that its making it much harder for me to upgrade like i used to and has to be hurting the industry a little bit....

If your speaking about DDR2 then it's because that is being phased out now. DDR3 ? I don't know why.

well - for DDR2 - its old & sooner or later they will be dropped from production all together, DDR2 is still around but its being phased out in favour of DDR3.
DDR3 is still fairly new tech, they probably dont cost a lot to make but companies like OCZ & Corsair love to put added bling in the form of heatpipes/heatspreaders & heatsinks - plus the fact that DDR3 has really taken off, but ram prices are always highly volatile - one day its up up next day you can get it dirt cheap.

RAM Manufacturer cartel fixing prices ? It won't be the first time in the memory market, either. Some manufacturers were already fined for it in the past.

All silicon manufactured in Taiwan in a hot commodity...problems stemming from the earthquake in the first week of march has affected LCD panels, gpus, and memory.

Why the resurgence in DRAM pricing? Shortages, as reported by OEMs from Apple to, most recently, Hewlett-Packard.

The economics of supply and demand say that, as long as shortages remain, prices are expected to climb. In December, DRAMXchange, which measures pricing in the DRAM market, actually expected DRAM pricing to fall in the first quarter, given the traditional drop in PC demand and the aggressive capital spending on DRAM manufacturing by DRAM companies. But the analyst site reported in January that unexpected demand had boosted DDR3 contract pricing by 40 percent.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2360019,00.asp

Prices were already on the rise due to supply constraints form the big box boys preparing DX11 boxes, and all manufacturer's(Dell, HP, lenovo, etc) have moved most of thier product lineup to DDR3, as P55/H55 and 890GX have made thier debut. These integrated gpu chipsets support DDR3, and so DDR3 is now in "value" office boxes.

Ergo, retail suppliers have had a harder time securing contracts, and then the earthquake hit.

No problem!

...I tend to pay attention to this stuff...dunno why though...

With all the free time I have, it's shear time spent reading that has me know what I do. And when people say I'm wrong...well...no kidding...that's what happens when you read the internets. Flawed sources give flawed info, and over the years I have learned who to listen to, who to ignore, and who is saying the exact opposite of the truth. I've been in disagreemtns with peopel before over info that was not my own, but htat's fine..I coudl care less...it's not MY info.

Alas, I am not infalliable, so I'm wrong pretty often too!

This is a crunch year for the memory industry, major PC platforms from Intel and AMD have made the switch to DDR3 (time to make money), as DDR2 production could be down (time to make money, too). With DDR2, it's not like they're overpricing it, the prices just went back to what they were a couple of years ago, closer to the original MSRPs.

DDR3 has the notch in a different place to DDR 2, there are no other differences in the pins IIRC.

There are many 1200mhz DDR2 sets. I have one from patriot(D9GKX) on my desk here...Gskill, OCZ, and Corsair should all have 1200mhz DIMMs as well.

I remember when you could get 2GB of DDR2 for like €20. I truly regret I was such a cheapskate back then. :(

Because few chipsets actually support that speed. Board makers have "added" thiis support to thier boards, but mention the OC, as it is NOT guaranteed your board will hit those speeds.

Yes that's a bunch of crap. I paid like 30 bucks for some adata 1 gb sticks ddr2 800 at newegg like 2 weeks ago.
Then bought another stick like a week later, the price has gone up for one weak ass DDR2 stick over 5 bucks.
What a rip off..

First off your statements lack major detail, and second i don't see any price change in memory as far as DDR2/3 goes unless you want Corsair garbage....

Soem retailers are holding old stock, and selling at old prices. Others, that have little inventory, are adjusting pricing, as they really sare having some issues getting some sticks:

IC pricing is staying the same, but retail prices are affected in various areas, as stick makers charge more...
