http://www.overclockers.com/intel-replace-lga1366-socket-2011/

"Intel’s current high-end socket for consumer processors, best known as LGA1366, is supposedly set to be replaced by a new part in 2011. According to information obtained by Bit-Tech, the new socket would come in the second half of 2011 and with it several new features to accommodate future processors. Along with the new part, Intel will inevitably be releasing a new chipset to be at the center of the new platform.

If manufacturer Intel stands true to its actual naming scheme, the new chipset should be called X68. Sources indicates that the new silicon is expected to implement more PCI-E lanes than the current X58, although it is still unclear if those lanes will be of the 2.0 or 3.0 type. The new platform is also rumored to have four memory channels, evolving from the triple-channel memory design of the X58. The new quadruple-channel memory system should allow for only one DIMM to be installed per channel to allow for maximum bandwidth. New motherboards will therefore be built with only four memory slots.

The new X68 chipset and its accompanying unnamed socket will mark the end of the LGA1366 domination as the high-end socket for consumers systems. Introduced in late 2008, it will have seen more than three years of service. The new platform will most likely be released at the same time as Intel’s upcoming processors featuring eight physical cores, capable of sixteen threads thanks to Intel’s hyper threading technology."

LGA 1155 is going to be the mainstream 4 core sandy bridge parts released later this year/early next year. So sorry to 1156.

This will make x58 even better deal. Motherboards nowadays lose value quicker than new cars. That's why I only buy open box motherboards from Newegg- saves on buyers remorse and Intel shenanigans. Right now x58 which is a high-end chipset starts at $114 - and most deals come in a box with accesories.

Why would the average person every need 4 cores

my parents still think their celeron is quick

This is exactly why I use AMD now...Not that AMD is Better I just can't afford to keep up with Intel's changes

Not true. AMD will require new motherboard for Bulldozer which is direct rival to sandy bridge.

Maybe, but doubtful, it fits in with everything else lately.

Either case, I don't need an upgrade by all means, I was just starting to consider it.

Yea, I'm quite happy with mine too, but I can't seem to break my clock on it and be stable. :ohwell:

I don't think my board likes 45nm quads, it brought my xeon x3210 2.13 quad over 4ghz.

Well you've been putting it off for how long now? It's about time, in you're mindset you'll be waiting until computers become obsolete.

I've been running my ABit IP35 Pro with an overclocked Q6600 (3.2GHz) for years now on my main rig and I love it. I did upgrade the video card to a HD5850. On my gaming rig, my E8600 overclocked to 4.32 GHz does just fine (again with a HD5850). I have no problem waiting for the next gen in CPUs, because I have not seen a huge jump in performance as compared to upgrading just the video card. I think by next year I will be ready to buy the new CPU platform for my main rig, get the next gen nNVidia or ATI card for that rig (whichever is the best at the time), and crossfire the HD5850s in the gaming rig.

I kinda saw this coming. P55 is going to be mainstream for a long time; This is why I switched from X58. The enthusiast platform will update. They will also release P65 I bet, but it will still use most of the same features and not be worth an upgrade. Definitely not going to use a different socket.

I hope that before x68, lga 1366 affordable upgrade from i7 920 will come... a nice 32nm 6core non-Xtreme, maybe even a 20nm 8 core 16 threads :D

will they continue Xeon support? if so, there's another upgrade path

Try dropping your multi and increasing your FSB to see if it's stable?

If it is, at around equal clock odds are it's your chip, if it's not it could be your board or ram.

Best advice I have ever given is to test the limits of everything by itself by lowering everything else to a minimum. I haven't done that myself with this chip yet, been too lazy, more or less hit the fsb to 450 and fired it up, then dropped the vcore.

Well it's lasted longer than my old 939 setup did :p

Protip: If you want to buy a socket which will last, don't get the same one as me, as they always get dropped fast.

yeah Ive been thinking about doing that for a while but im just been incredibly lazy about it lol. I dont think its the ram cuz its already underclocked. I'l probably give it ago 2moro afternoon
