Not Responding a lot and general slowness

So just recently a lot of my programs etc. have been becoming unresponsive A LOT, I'm also having general slowness and slugishness in booting up and also sometimes loading things up, particularly firefox for some reason.

I'm also having little problems like if I rename a folder it won't change to that name until I refresh the window. :wtf:

I've tried cleaning registry with Registry Mechanic
I've done virus scans on Microsoft Security Essentials and Spybot Search & Destroy and so far these problems still persist.

Specs are to the left, any ideas?

Defrag machine, check the amt of services running in background, clean your case along with powersupply fans.

I'm going to defrag tonight.

I checked services, don't know the number but there's maybe three times as many as processes... maybe more maybe less.

51 processes running. I stay conscious of what is running on my machine anyway though so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

CPU usage is always 0-4% when I'm just browsing and the memory is currently at 1.29/4GB.

Could do with a bit of a clean in the case, but I'm doubtful it's that causing slow downs.

How long have you been running that same installation of Windows? It gets old and sluggish after a while.

I agree with a defrag & cleaning your case & all ,
if you never clean your inside case & have the computer for a year or more , it is well over due for a good clean up...

Open you case & you'll be amaze how much dusts you'll have in there , specially the CPU , graphic card & power supply...

Go get a can of compress air & blow out all the dusts away.

More dusts = more heat , more heat = instability & slow down...

I clean up my inside case 3 to 4 times a year

I tested HDD and RAM, it found no problems on either.

My harddrive with OS, Games etc. is only about 5 months old so I hope that isn't causing the problems. It's a Samsung F3.

i hadi ssues like this... turned out my SATA cable was shit, and crapped out occasionally. replaced it and now all is well.

Think i've got a few spares, will try this too. Nothing else has helped so far.

Oh another problem I forgot to mention, most of the time now it won't shut down or restart properly... I have to force it.

In which case, it is usually the mobo (75%) or PSU (25%). A bad driver can cause frequent system hangs.

Again these are both not very old, I wasn't expecting problems with them already.

+1 to this. I had the same problem. I replaced a HDD only to have the same issue. Come to find out it was a cable. :eek:

But at least I had a nice fresh HDD to play with. A bad cable can also cause the start up and shut down delays.

Lesson for the day: Test everything before spending money on replacement gear.

Create a partition and install a fresh copy of windows there. Boot up the fresh copy and see if the problems extend to a new copy. If yes, then its hardware, if not then its software problem.

Again these are both not very old, I wasn't expecting problems with them already.

The first thing to try is unplug everything that isn't required externally (printers, cameras, etc.), then internally (optical drives, floppy drives, audio cards, etc.). If it still does it after that, there's a good chance it is the PSU or motherboard.

I found that http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ and http://hijackthis.de/ are excellent for preliminary find if your computer has any virus/malware. Check that out.
