GTX470 vs HD5850

I was thinking about these to cards and how reviews show them. Which one is best to buy??

I voted for the GTX 470. I find this a little interesting as most posts I have seen from you about Nvidia are pretty negative (as far as fermi goes)

I gotta say that from reviews gtx 470 is pretty good but the power draw is still a littlebit too high.
5850 powerdraw is just amazing and I voted for it maybe beacuse I own one but still

the GTX470 is only slightly more powerful than the 5850 and electricity costs makes 5850 the winner.

Over here the HD5850 is ~400$, and the GTX470 is ~430$. If I were buying a card now over here with the prices as they are, I'd get the GTX470 (But I need WORKING OpenCL support and CUDA is a plus, so YMMV).

I voted GTX470.

No doubt the GTX 470 requires more power; but they also overclock like crazy

I have been able to oc mine to 863/900/1726:

That is a 42% core clock/shader increase with an 8% increase in memory

I run these cards at stock speeds and 45% fan while gaming and they stay cool and quiet

I voted GTX470. ATI's drivers have been shitty since 8.11, and CUDA kicks ass. I'm about to make the switch to nVidia myself. I'm tired of crappy drivers.

One thing I forgot to mention is video quality. The GTX 470's help to make 3Dmark 06 and Vantage look absolutely awesome

I know, they are only a benchmark; but still...

The only game I have played yet is Aliens vs Predator. I have everything maxed-out and it is awesome!!! Smooth gameplay and awesome visuals :toast:

Gtx 470 just because of the better perrormance with tesselation and the better control panel and drivers. And the physx and CUDA is awesome. And also because i don't give a **** about eyefinity never use/will use more than 1 display at least not till i live on my own (im 17)

Even for 2 displays still gtx470 can handle that. Eyefinity is not for normal consumers.
Well the palit gtx470 looks the best deal for now

Anyway ati has its own advantages and remember that gtx470 was released 6 months later which had enough time to surpass that card, but 6 months are way too much!
Still the match is being tighter and tighter

I'd say if you don't mind paying a little bit more and don't mind the extra power consumption, go with the GTX 470. Don't get me wrong, the 5850 is a great card, but I just think the 470 is a more well-rounded product.

I've owned more ATI cards in my life than nVidia cards, actually (The latest being a HD4870X2, followed by two HD5670s). I just prefer the GTX470.

Yours man is a good strategy. I buy a new card every 4 years and a new rig every 4 years.
I bought my rig back in 2006 and now it is time to buy a new one, but without the graphic card.
I bought my card in 2007 so still waiting for 2011 to buy a new one and i dont want to spend a lot for cards as i am addicted in games, meaning i want to spend all money on the card

Normally gtx470 would have had the same performance if it wasn't for drivers, but still it is worse in engineering even if it has more things like cuda or other physics things

I've owned both cards. I'd pick the 470. I've just found gameplay a bit smoother in some instances where the 5850 was a bit "choppy". Also, I think the Fermi cards are unfairly crucified for the heat and fan noise issues. While the card does run 8-10c hotter than my 5850's did at full load, I never break 88c. The fan at any speed I set it at was quieter than the 5850's at the same speed.

At similar prices the 470 will kill a 5850 both at max overclock. However you cannot go wrong with either. I would buy the 470 gtx if the price is right.

hmmm, it's hard choice

but it's boiled down to your preference, do you like extra stuff that nvdia gave you wit extra cost, extra heat, extra power bill but come with a little extra performance(it's like muscle car).

or you you like ati offering, with lower power bill, lower temperature, lower price but a bit lower performance(it's like sedan).

but for me i chose HD 5850 because i like efficient card.

When oced it's not a little difference it's a giant difference a 470 gtx when oced reaches past stock 480 gtx's and no 5850 can do that.
