Stalker.... Shadow of Chernobyl

Hi all,

a friend of mine gave me Stalker shadow of chernobyl to play and test. I have to say that the game(IMO) S.U.C.K.S.! i found the gameplay like any other shooter, the characters and the story unmoving. The graphics(for a 2008 game mediocre).

Nothing, nothing could make me play the game more than 30 minutes. The enemies(although diffcult) look like carricatures and i do not understand whether the games has a main story, whether it is an RPG(many hcoices whether to help or not) or just a go in and shoot everything that moves.

AFter trying the game for half an hour i went online to read reviews. Most reviews were giving a thumbs up.

Am i doing something wrong? are the other 2 STALKER games better?

From what iv herd, the ending is the best bit /sarcsim.

that game is so not worth playing imo, its the only one i have played.

I find that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a love or hate it game. Personally I love the series. One of, if not, the most atmospheric games I've ever played. I really do recommend playing it in the dark, with headphones on, the audio cranked up (surround if applicable) and with the Complete Pack installed.

If you don't like the game then, I doubt you ever will. The other two games are more of the same to be honest and if you're not into the story then I doubt you'll find them enthralling enough to warranty playing them through.

If you didn't like the first part, you're not likely to like the other two either.

Call of Pripyat is a little better with visuals.

What's wrong? is it a shooter or a stelath game? i mean i have played many games, few were the games that made me feel like uninstalling them soon...

It's First Person RPG - the game forces you to play in a specific way depending on the scenarios you get yourself in from the choices you've made. So, you may need to run and gun at some points or you'll need to use stealth to sneak by.

It really is a fantastic game when it comes down to it.

Im really likin Stalker: Clear Sky.... A bit slow moving but a decent game nonetheless.

Not a problem, that Dolgov guy is amazing all his mods should work with the Steam versions.

Stalker is a wonderful game is very atmospheric, and although the graphics is the best, the game has a very intriguing story.

I own the whole series I'm playing these days in Call of Pripyat, is very good as previous but never was like the first.

The dialogues are not interpreted that perhaps the bad thing that they not have done, i enjoyed listening to various people in the area. They speak only when you greet or in the missions.

i never got the RPG part of it really.. i beat shadow of chernobyl, and honestly thought it was a FPS, all the RPG elements were totally lost on me. :/

Well I loved it... but I think he has a valid point/question, which is: WHY does everyone say its an RPG, when it feels and plays like an FPS?

I have the same question really, I also thought i did something wrong with the game/played it improperly to where I just didnt get it...

for me... Dragon age... RPG... Mass Effect...RPG... Neverwinter Nights...RPG... Oblivion...

Stalker? Straight FPS - why does the word RPG even make it into the description?

Maybe it's because of the things you can do with the factions.

I personally loved Stalker. I have a collection of bootleg material, and Stalker was part of that collection, but I liked it so much I actually bought it. I also bought Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.

I honestly think the graphics are great(back in 2007 they kicked ass, even in DX8 mode, atleast I got good framerates). But for me, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of games seemed very difficult for me, but yet I had a soft spot for them. Between the great graphics, audio, music, atmosphere and overall gameplay design, all of that ties together into an enjoyable game. More to it than an fps that I can swallow, but I try to play the game every once and a while, each time I get used to it more and more, which results in me liking it more, like I should, as well as defending it against those too ignorant to spend more than 30 minutes with it. I also haven't played them with mods, so it is fun without them, but Im sure they would enhance it considerably.

As maybe some of you know, STALKER is based on a book. There are also tens of "mini" books of the STALKER series written in Russian. Those books are fantastic (If you can read in Russian )

My point is that if you get into the STALKER atmosphere, the game becomes alot more than just some FPS. If you dont, then you might find it boring.

Someone needs to start a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. because I own all 3 games and LOVE EM'.

First time I installed Clear Sky I thought: what is this crap? At that time I was also playing Crysis, Far Cry 2, etc. But I gave it another go; I started SoC first and I loved it, it was a bit special. Then came Clear Sky, tougher to run but with better visuals and an epic level: Limansk, especially the end of that level. Now I've just started CoP; all Stalkers games are very hard to get the grips at the beginning but it's worth it in my opinion.
