Young addicts are skipping meals, playing truant from school and are even stealing money from their parents to buy the latest games.
And one expert today warned two hours of playing games produces the same high as taking a line of cocaine.
Alarming figures reveal three out of five under 16-years-old plays video games to such an extent that it is a cause for concern for health care professionals.

TIGR is exactly right. As a kid, my parents would limit my playtime depending on how I did as school, whether my homework and chores were done and other things like that. It's translated well into adulthood. I put things ahead of gaming, but I play as often as I can.

It's probably the reason I never lost my job while playing WoW

And video game addiction is a scapegoat. If the parents would take control of the situation, they would see an improvement in their child's behavior. Take the system away, lay down some ground rules. I used to pay for my video games through my chores, I never had to steal anything from my parents. If I wanted extra money, I had to do extra work.

Hmm, I used to game like a maniac and fought with my parents repeatedly. Still manage to get good results . And I noticed that smart kids in my school game far more than the average kid. Is it gaming that makes them smart, or smart kids are naturally attracted to gaming?

I made different conclusion. I don`t know about cocaine, I know about gaming and I know that it is not dangerous. And if cocaine is as dangerous as gaming, than it is not as dangerous as people think it is . Maybe I shoud try some.

It has nothing to do with gaming, nor coke, nor anything else in their external environment.
Most people, and especially young adults, tend to gravitate toward something that challenges them mentally without confining them physically.
This is why you will see smart people balk at the authoritive setting of school, but will excel when left on their own.
The problem is that the process of learning requires discipline, which these people lack.
They submerse themselves in that which stimulates them mentally, without any mental discipline to handle all that which is required in their current situation, or life, in a balanced manner.

Whose fault is this? .... Parents.

seriously, gaming gets me a high as good as cocaine? cocaine must be f'ing weak then...


I know that gaming has affected my mentality. I'm an RTS gamer by nature, so i always strategise things. something needs to be done? i work out a complete plan for it before starting, as opposed to people who just rush in headfirst (cough CS players) or people who cant do anything without someone holding their hand (cough WoW players... no offense w1zzy, you're excluded )


The only part i agree with is that gaming changes your mentality... if i game before work my minds in high gear, driving a car with my brain on fire is most definitely putting me off my game and not a wise move, so i always watch a movie or something to dumb down before work. Then again, thats possibly just adrenaline.

shush, i actually dont do that, i think everything through before doing anything. and i play 3-4 hours a day css. but lately ive been working 2 jobs and school so no gaming time. i really dont see how gaming has affected my life. other than making me know wasting money on booze and drugs is stupid, because i dont want to make myself act like some of the people that i play css with(lol) so i dont spend money on drug or booze other than as a social drinker. It has really made my spelling epicfail though.

i use my money on computer stuff instead . which will actually last more than one night and that if i do it too much a night i wont remember.

As a counselor, I deal with addictions everyday. ANYTHING can become an addiction. The important thing is to take a personal inventory on how your interests or hobbies affect your life. If it interrupts the important things, and you can't stop yourself from doing it, it is possibly an addiction that carries consequences.

As someone who has tried them both, I can honestly say that games don't get you nearly as much poontang as cocaine.
