I am looking to buy a new HDD for my Media center. My old Seagate drive went up in smoke again. looking for about 2TB at most the drive will have to do is send Movies to the Xbox360's so i don't think speed means much.

This one looks good- i use windows 7 so i don't think i would have these issues the reviews talks about $140 (Maybe -$30 off)

I did get this one but it was DOA, so i sent it back
HITACHI Deskstar HD32000 IDK/7K (0S00164) 2TB 7200...

I really like the price on this but the Cache thing kinda scares me, also my last 2 seagates cough on fire both 320GB 620AS(same place too) $88. RMA with seagate is long but they always replaced my drives.

Well, my experience with HDD is shorted to Seagate, Western Digital and Maxtor. Although they all end up being pretty much the same, since they all belong to the same conglomerate.

Seagates are reliable. I've had them for very long and they've never failed me, but I guess it was a stroke of luck since i see loads of people with problems.
If you want to buy a Seagate get a 7200.12. The 7200.11 version had some models with faulty firmware, mostly the models ranging from 500GB to 1.5TB. The error resulted in data loss and expensive paperweights.
The 7200.12 version has a very good firmware and this time they got more reliable.

Western Digital builds very good HDDs. But you must choose wisely the model. Green WD are low RPM HDDs in order to save power. Instead of running at 7200rpm (standard in current models) they run at 5400rpm, thus being less noisy and less power demanding. So expect slow performance (especially on bigger size disks). Blue WD are standard quality and good HDD. Black WD are made to preform better. The Blue and Black version all run at 7200rpm.

The HDD Cache is nothing to worry about, the bigger it is, the better.

I would go with either the WD or the seagate, the ultimate decision would be regarding the price.

I don't know about Samsungs and Hitachis, so if someone could fill this part...thanks!

I have two of the Hitachis and really like them. They are just used for extra storage and perform well. $150 seems a little steep considering they were like $120 on a deal a while ago and I got mine for $140 six months ago.

Ya i got for $120 but was DOA or my seagate killed it. Seagate went up in smoke at first boot after i Installed the Hitachis

Well, my Samsung 750GB died after 2 years. Well, not completely, but it started causing problems.
Samsung F3 drives are still one of the fastest you can get though.

Indeed, very nice choice and a very good deal.
I'm going to purchase two 1TB Seagates for my rig (eventually :p), but they're going to be the 64MB cache version, so they're more expensive.
If they're not faulty from factory, you won't be disappointed.

I myself have a 1TB seagate barracuda and it is very good. Even with speed it is a monster. I have 1 Hitachi hdd 80GB pata and 1 Samsung 160GB sata. The samsung makes so much noise that you can't even think of and the hitachi is not that good in speed. The best choice would be western digital as i have heard they are the best, but the best seller in the world for 2009 was seagate.
