Sudden Black screen

I was just watching a vid on the msn site and all of a sudden the screen went blank, the monitor went into sleep mode, so i checked all cables etc, it didn't come back on, i looked at my case and the hd light was still flickering so the comp was still running in the back ground, despite i couldn't hear anything.

is my 4870 on its way out?

it was over clocked marginally, its only 18 months old.

dont be too worried if it has only happend once. if it does it again then there is cause for concern.


could be anything, driver crashed and could not reload at all... cable fell out slightly... card overheated... theres a lot of things that may have caused this.

when i re-booted, after post i got the windows start menu, the safe mode options and normal start. i started normal.

i just went into Cat control centre and turned all clock speeds down to factory settings.

What he says. The first time I would blame some exotic driver panic. If it keeps happening though, theres a high chance it's the video card.

if it is the video card, then thats the perfect excuse to get a 5870.

i cannot justify getting one now, the 4870 is still a fab card.

Dont forget to disable the fan but most importaintly! record it and upload it

Had this exact problem before, turned out to be the PSU.

After it did this a few times it killed not only my video card, but also my second PCI-E slot, and my sound card as well, strangely enough. Machine still worked completely after I replaced it aside from those problems but it sucked nevertheless
