I just recently got interested in how computers work & what not. I really want to learn how all the components of a gaming PC work & which ones are compatible with one another so I can get started on my first build. I know some basic knowledge for computers, but not enough to be confident in the building process. Would anyone like to lecture me on what I should know before I go out buying random parts & then finding out that none of them are compatible with an ATX model... :p

I bought an Antec Nine Hundred BareBones Case for my base of starting my build & the book called "Building a PC for Dummies" 5th Edition (which suits me well for being a noob).

I would like to know what MoBo's would be best for high pro-gaming with all the the bells & whistles. I'd also would like to know what type of Video & Sound cards I would need? Where can I find a decent priced PSU for my Antec Nine Hundred? (I'd prefer at least a 650-850w PSU) What type of Chip Set would I need to get? Is it any difficult to connect all the wiring for the build? Will I be royally screwed if one of the components burn out or if one has a short/ does the waranties cover stuff like that?
 I honestly don't mind spending a little extra to create the PC I need, but if anyone knows of a good/great site that I can get a good deal on all this stuff, would be much appreciated :respect:

Well I don't want to write a friggin novel on here lol so If anyone would like to lend a helping hand to a newbie like me I would much much appreciate your surpirior knowledge :D

atx is a good standard, most parts will be compatible.
I go with an asus rampage , there is a new crosshair (iv) out that is good for mobo.

ati cards are really good this generation. powerful, cheap(er) , and run cooler. I'd go with a 5xxx series. I've got 2x5850s, and love them. 5770,5850,5870, or the new (5970?) one are all good choices. if you want to use two you need to make sure your motherboard is "Crossfire capable"

Corsair, PC Power and Cooling - make the best psus imo. a 650 is enough for a high end cpu, 2 5850s, 3+ hdds, etc.a 750 is a bit more breathing room, that's what i use.

you generally go with the newest motherboard you can afford, with the highest number rating chipset. an fx is preferred over a gx, if you are buying your own graphics card. (fx has no integrated video, thus cheaper or with better features, normally)

your motherboard decides everything. it needs pci express x16 2.0 slots for video cards. it will have a "slot type" and then you need to find cpus with that slot type. ask here.
it will have a RAM rating, you need ram that matches it. 2 different numbers (x-x-x-x , and a speed rating (ex:1600mhz)

check out newegg.com. their main base is in CA and they are THE place to buy parts from. you ill have it in a day and as cheap as possible.

to narrow down the questions you need to ask:

pick a CPU socket first.

Current ones are:

Intel: 1156/1366

AMD: AM2+/AM3

Once you pick a socket you can pick a chipset, and once thats done you pick the RAM you need.

Then you pick a video card, and you'll be able to tell what PSU you need (amount/type of connectors, wattage) and go from there.

A budget is a good starting point, also you want to game, what else? do you want energy efficient components or is that not important, what are the must haves?

Yes gaming & also the most energy efficient I suppose, since my electric bill is pretty high as it is.
But mainly a Gaming/HD Movie type of PC is what I'm after..

My budget is bout $900 max... since I'm only buying 1-2 component(s) per (my paycheck that I get every two weeks or so) But I wouldn't mind spending a little extra just to be able to show off something I built wit my own hands...

You said energy efficient so I would have to sway you away from current generation Nvidia video cards. I highly recommend an ATI Radeon HD 5770 given your budget... that's a start. ;)

There are different sockets used by CPUs, so when you select a CPU, pick one that is compatible with it. then in All the other components, make sure your mobo supports it. example, when you want to have an Crossfire setup, get a crossfire supported motherboard.

for the ram, you want DDR3 and 3 slots, get one supporting DDR3 and have 3 slots(the more the slots, the better). also ATX is the standard size for Computers,

and your ATX case is big enough to handle everything you throw at it(as long as you don't overkill or get the most expensive, biggest parts)

For example.
you want a Intel Core i7-920, its using socket LGA 1336
you want a to buy a 8GB - DDR3 RAM
you want to buy two HD 5870s. its using PCI-e x16.
i guess you wont overclock cause your still new so no overclock

then get a motherboard that has a socket LGA 1366, supports i7, supports DDR3 rams, has at least 2 slots for 4x2 Gb, at least 2 PCI-e x16 slots, supports crossfire and fits in your Case.

also check for sizes and dimensions cause some cooler, ram, heatsinks, videocards, mobo design, wont fit with each other or wont fit in a particular case.

i'd pick an AMD build personally. and def not the most expensive mobo, probly one around $100-140.
i'd give a wishlist of the parts i'd pick with taht budget but that wouldn't do good for learning process. After reading a bit, i suggest you go to newegg.com and start with a processor. Phenom II quads are a good start but pic a Phenom II 9XX of some sort. From there pick mobo, memory, dvd drive, HDD, PSU, then graphics card.

I would suggest running either 3X2GB or 6X2GB to take advantage of the triple channel bandwidth on X58.

I'll think monitor is 1680X1050, maybe higher or lower.

Rough Build
Phenom II X6 1055T
Gigabyte 890G board
Some nice 2x2Gb Cas 7 rams
WD Blacks 640Gb, maybe bigger
Corsair/Antec/Seasonic/Good brand PSU 650w
Cheapest optical drive
And lastly, some shiny HD 5770

I am not too sure whether the CCC allows powerplay on non-laptops, but its very handy for my laptop (when on battery, shutting off the 4570 makes the battery last longer). Please confirm

+1

me too i'd pick AMD cause its cheaper and good for a starter build.

Oh also wanted to know ... is it possible to mount an external hard drive tower bay of 6-10 bay slots to my Antec Nine Hundred BareBones Case? I have issues with using up all my memory on my laptops.... I do a lot of Photography, so I have millions of friggin pictures... So I guess I need storage hard drives as well...

Could you elaborate on the "external hard drive tower bay of 6-10 bay slots"?

Something like this? :D

You will have to mod your case, potentially use port replicators/NAS storage to fit all those drives, but I am sure the 5+ internal drive bay is more than enough for your needs.

1-2TB totally new tech for me .... lol I forgot they have those Thanks for bringing me back to reality lmao!

Ooh yes this question might be odd to ask... Is my Antec 900 case Feline proof? Reason why I ask is mainly because when I first bought my case & pulled it out of its box my cat took a liking to it & decided that is would be her new sleeper... (she friggin slept on top of the case!!) I came home from work & I was like WTF?!

You won't need any external enclosures unless you want to make your storage portable. I would recommend against 2TB drives as I've read too many stories of premature deaths, which is why I chose to get 2 1TB drives as opposed to 1 or 2 2TB drives.

So what have we established so far?

One of the motherboards I was eyeing was the MSI Big Bang XPower... which for some odd reason I couldn't find the price tag for it & supposibly comes with its own VGA card & these two things (THX & I forgot what the other thing was lol xD

I'm pretty sure that sucker would run uber with an i7 Intel Core Chip..

Also kept a watch on the MSI 980a G65 MoBo, most of my buddies tell me to either stick with these two MoBos: Asus or MSI.

Some of the supply resources they referred me to Newegg.com/PriceWatch.com/TigerDirect.com/Geeks.com/etc
But which one has the best deals is what I want to know... I look at the sites but I get to side tracked when I do price comparison ...
