well for starters if you haven't got any get yourself some decent antistatic bags to put your hardware in,they are relatively inexpensive, and will save you the trouble of people receiving static damaged goods and giving you bad feedback
obviously next is your packing material ,i've not sent anything so the rest of the guys here should be able to give you tips on that :)

edit
i see you already know about the antistatic stuff:laugh: i'm just looking for availability ;)

Sometimes for CPUS, I use some of my wife's jewelry boxes she gets from QVC. there big enough for a CPU plus foam padding so the pins don't get bent and some antistatic plastic

Let me rephrase your question for you:

"How do I ship hardware safely that I do not have any packaging for?"

Well thats easy, buy shipping materials. Packing foam, bubble wrap, shipping tape, ESD bags(if necesssary~ram, gfx cards), and shipping boxes.

If you cant ship an item try Craigslist where you can meet someone locally and not need these materials for safe arrival.

If it's something small like a CPU, I wrap it several times in bubble wrap, and tape it shut. Then, throw into a box with packing peanuts, and send it on its way!

USPS Priority boxes are usually my weapon of choice for bigger items. For smaller items such as CPUS, RAM, small graphics cards etc, I usually get padded envelopes and further wrap them in bubble wrap myself to make sure they're save. Antistatic bags are cheap. I've never bought any and I have a ton of them—anytime I get anything with an antistatic bag I save it so I can re-use it later.

If your looking for packing material for cpus and antistatic bags for video cards, ram, boards, hard drives and such I would suggest going by a local PC shop. I know we keep about every static bag/cpu jewel case from system builds and I see them pouring out of our bins. Go in and ask to see if they have any available for free or at what modest fee.

Shipped a 4870 to a user here on TPU not to long ago. All i did was put the card in an anti-static bag, put it in a box, and filled the box with ripped up newspapers. It got there safely.

My girlfriend does the same thing. I broke down and ordered a crapton of Priority Mail boxes from USPS for free. Going to have to throw out all the boxes I've acquired.

It's gonna be like the TV show Hoarders for me. "No, I wanna keep that one. That's the box Newegg shipped my RAM in :("

So I will have a ton of flattened boxes of various shapes and sizes, and I have two LARGE boxes: one for packing peanuts, and one for bubble-wrap/air bags/antistatic bags. And of course a couple dozen rolls of packing tape.

LOL!! yea ive got some of those flat rate boxes as well but i like alot of the smaller boxes you get that are different shapes cause they are GREAT at shipping like a HSF for less money than a medium flat rate box!

Nope. Cheapest way to do it is to make an account on USPS.com and pay with a credit card. It's about 10% cheaper than online, and you print labels. If you go to the post office, they charge you almost $2 (or more) for Delivery Confirmation while online is free, and you have to affix your own to and from address on there. It's a whole lot simpler to do it all online. Then you walk into the post office, say here you go it's ready to go, they check the weight, scan the barcode, and you walk out.

Delivery confirmation in my area of CA costs $.75 to $.80 :D They have free adhesive labels to use with Priority mail although you do have to fill them out yourself.

With the amount of shipping I do I really would like to use USPS.com, but I'm already used to going in and getting it done- no time for change :)

I'm SO glad I made the switch, though. It's definitely saved me some time and money.

And yeah, $0.70 for DC, my bad. I swear it used to be like $1.50.

Last xmas I shipped a mobo to Pantherx12 - I realized that although I had an antistatic bag and the original box, I didn't have anything to prevent the mobo from banging inside the box during transport... So I improvised by using that shiny plastic stringy stuff found in xmas hampers and stuffed that inside the mobo box, between the antistatic bag containing the mobo and the actual carton.
Pantherx12 lol'd when he opened it :D

Another thought on anti-static bags, All of my local shops throw this stuff away all of the time. They will give you bags for free, as well as motherboard boxes etc. Last time I stopped at a shop, the guy gave me more bags than I needed. Something like 35 of them.
