Formula350: what if you take the fan shroud out and just strap a low rpm 120mm fan there? Wont be that pretty, but would be quiet, surely cooler and no need to worry about fan profiles.

I think 120MM would be way too large. The heatsink is very small! I think 100MM (if they make that) or 90MM would be better. But 120MM may very well fit just fine, I'm not really that good with metric conversions by visuals haha But yes I actually had thought about doing exactly that! I'd probably still use the header on the card though to power it, that way I'd be able to control it at least. I'd look for one that would spin faster at the same lower voltage compared to the one on there now. Given that I find this card quite ugly as it sits, with that heatsink at least, it wouldn't bother me much. Factor in that my case doesn't have a window, if I decide to ever put my PC in there (it's sitting on a quick made tech bench), it wouldn't ever be seen anyways :) I'm in the process of building a real tech-bench though, so we'll see how it turns out haha I HAZ AH SERPRIZ 4 IT!!1 :pimp: I got a radiator fan out of a Toyota that was getting junked at my friend's shop awhile back, and they are 12v ;) Mind you @ 12v its rather loud so I'd not feed it quite that much. End result I'm aiming for is like that Antec Skeleton heh

One little snafu with this new-fan idea though.... The shroud doesn't come off unless you remove the WHOLE heatsink. As I'm sure that was the exact reason for it being constructed that way :ohwell: That was the main reason why I haven't done it already heh I didn't want to void any warranty.

any chance for the 5850? would highly reccomend over 5770. do whatever it takes. save up, wait, borrow. especially at your resolution. hate to c such a good system being bottlenecked by a video card. 5850 would last much longer performance wise, + great overclocking potential at least with reference models, it also exhausts heat.. That is afcors if gaming is one of ur main priorities.
back on topic, i would choose which ever has either better reviews or lower price/discount

What bottleneck ? He has a very powerful CPU and RAM just how is it going to bottleneck ? the HD5770 can handle any thing and every thing with out any bottlenecks .

He implied that the 5770 would be the bottleneck, not the CPU or memory :slap:

I thought about a 5850 myself, except it costs too much, and 2x 5770s > performance than a 5850 (in 90% of the benchmarks at least). The OC potential of the 5770 is still great as well. I've managed to get my memory on BOTH cards higher than what I've seen any of the 5850s or 5870s in reviews. Oddest part, is the memory on mine is the exact same (Samsung and identical chip numbers)

Either way, the plan for me right now was a single 5770 and then later on get a second one, but I managed to get BOTH of mine brand new for under $240 :) I even sent in a MIR on one, so I might get $10 off that price too lol So I got better than 5850 performance for the cost of a 5830 :D

My point is this: The 5770 is no slouch when it comes to games as is, but pair it with another and you have a power house for cheap!

Fellas I recommended the MSI hawk first

but it was too expensive where he lives, he wanted a guaranteed voltage controlled 5770 and money was a issue, I read several reviews and most were positive on the ASUS which was allot cheaper where he lives and higher level cards (5850) are too expensive. I don't know what to tell you guys because I have read several positive reviews on the card and a few negative. Maybe Asus has figure out the problem by now. I realize we have some members who's cards were not great but the majority, of even Neweggs reviews, are positive and yes I know thats not a super great source but of the 61 the vast majority are good. If it's a issue he can return it or replace the fan with a better one. I didn't the best I could with the info I had.

I have had the Saphire ref, XFX ref, and the MSI hawk and the MSI was much better than any of them. it is more money but you get what you pay for.

Well I have two of these sitting behind me (laptop = internet, desktop = fun till I figure out the WiFi issue), and they suck at cooling :p The card overall, can't really complain. I also can't say 100% that the memory doesn't overvolt since ASUS's software won't load, which could be due to me not using their own drivers (which is retarded if so). I wouldn't be at ALL surprised if it didn't support it though. And frankly, given that I'm getting 1395MHz on default 1.5v, I'm fine with that since the memory is only convection cooled! Not exactly what I prefer, but I'm not aware of a 5770 with out memory on the backside of the card to make it worth while for the manufacturer to equip a cooler that cooled the memory. Though I have seen one that did cool the GPU side memory chips and NOT the back side

That is your opinion . I have had great over clock results with the MSI Hawks and I have never had any issues at all with the cards dying on me but I have had XFX cards crap out for no reason at all . I am not saying they suck I am just saying in my opinion and judging by a lot of other post here that the MSI is a better card. So yes REALLY.

Well I just found out in another thread, that the damn 5850 can do 925MHz on 1.088v, and I figuered a 5770 MUST be able to do default clocks at that! To be sure I tested 1.1v first, but have moved down to 1.087v and 15min so far in FurMark going strong! Best part, Temps are 61c card 1 and 57c card 2 at 66% fan, which is far better than mid 70s at 1.2v and 75% fan! I'm sure now I could even handle running the fan on auto (seems ot pretty much hove at 30% though)!

Also the XFX posted above, is the one I was talking about with the heatpipe cooler. Works really well from the reviews, but now I'm thinking this CUcore might not be so bad with this substatially lower voltage! I'll let ya know what idle temp is at whatever it decides to idle at for clocks (sometimes 157/300 sometimes 400/1395)

Yeah so did my MSI GTX260 card just carped out one day , Yes it is my opinion and I still think the OP would be better off getting the XFX card just My opinion as well . :)
