Radeon 5870 Display Port problem?

Hey guys, quick question here. I have a Diamond Radeon 5870, reference version, and recently purchased a third monitor (Dell U2311H) and hooked it up to the display port on the back. When I put my computer in hibernate and try to wake it up later, the GPU fan would ramp up to 100% and the screens would not turn on. The only solution I have at this point is to manually hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn it off as the reset button won't even work.

But if I first unplug the display port plug, the computer starts perfectly. I can then plug the monitor back in and everything is fine. Does anyone know what's going on?

Dell told me the issue with the monitor failing to resume from sleep was due to a too-low-power signal being sent over DP, lower than what thier monitors require.

I have had quite a few 5870's, and only one of them has no DP issues at all, so I do beleive the problem is hardware-based.

however, make sure you have your motherboard set to repost VGA on wakeup, as this has fixed the problem for some people.

Also look at a different cable, or an active adapter.

I'm not really having much luck dealing with this issue, and getting any real info was to what the true cause of the problem is. Some cards just have DP issues, period, others don't at all, and some give mixed results. Unfortunately, I cannot suggest which fix will work for you, as it varies.

For me, I have found that the 10.4a preview driver released back in march works best...10.5 adn 10.6 are suppose to ahve fixes for multi-monitor users, or something(I get conflicting stories on this one), however, both sets of drivers only make the DP issue worse than it was before, as well as having other issues, and I cannot confirm whether they are related, or just due to my system config.

It's almost like the DP hardware gets stuck in sleep itself, and when the rest of the vga boots up, the DP failure causes a non-recoverable crash. But I'm guessing about that...

I would contact Diamond directly, and see what they have to say. I do know for sure that there are many users with this problem, and it's not something specific to any card maker. It's more likely to be a fault of the reference design, and maybe one or two components in the DP pipeline not being adequate...only AMD can really answer that, but they refuse to even aknowledge that there is any problem, at least in my interactions iwth them...maybe you cna have more luck. I just want things to work as they should.

Yea, it's not a huge problem, since I can always unplug the DP cable before turning the PC on and then plug it back, but it's a big inconvenience, especially if you forget to do that.

I'll try to change the VGA setting in bios, so hopefully that fixes the issue for me.

Maybe magically a driver can fix it, but I do have to say, I have been waiting for that for a few months now. I just turned off sleep.

I've run into alot of weird display issues...cannot get monitors to work 1/3/2, when applied, it swaps to 1/2/3. Tried swapping the dvi ports......seems to have remembered which monitor is which!



Took alot of playing around to get stuff in eyefinity mode to work on the middle monitor when resolution was only equal to one monitor...kept getting stuck on the far left panel, and that's just asking for neck problems.

If I'm not mistaken, that option isn't there in the bios. I have the same board and while I've never have looked for it, I've spent too much time in it and I'm pretty sure that it is not there.

I'm on 1.6 fwiw.

install the 10.5 drivers that idle your card at 400mhz, i had the same issue fixed it straight away, not an ideal solution, but im happy, power bill..meh

Be sure to let us know how/if you solve it...10.6/10.6 should BOTH have the 400/1200 idle clocks, so I'm not too sure that this will solve your problem, however, if it does, then it might actually point it to being hardware in my case.
