Sound card can damage speakers?

Hello!
I bought a new pair of boxes yesterday and was thinking if the integrated sound card realtek can damage the boxes if i set the volume too high. In fact the sound gets a bit of irritation when i open the volume to a certain point. Not mentioning of going to max cuz that is disastrous. Anyone knows if they can damage the boxes if i set always the volume to the "irritation point"?

Yes you are right. Now the questions are:
1. Does that screeching sound alarm you that the speakers are being damaged?
2. Buying a new sound card makes the speakers max the volume out without screeching?
(a modern sound card)

Are the speakers powered? Sound gets distorted when there's not enough power being sent to the speakers. A new sound card would help, but don't overdrive your speakers. Listen to them at a clear level.

Read my post. Sound will be distorted.

mdsx1950 is right on. VV Especially if the speakers aren't shielded.

I noticed that if you keep a mic connected to your pc and if its close to your speakers, it will make a screeching noise.

Yes, Alek, it is possible to damage the speakers by overdriving them. How far they have to be overdriven before physical failure occurs depends upon the quality of the speaker(s).

If the sound is distorting either the speakers are being overdriven or the soundcard is producing distortion in the signal at higher volumes.

The way to check is to hook the speakers up to something else and crank up the volume to a comparable level. If the speakers do not distort, it's the soundcard.

@Mdsx .. yes Mic to close to the speakers will cause feedback (original signal being refed into the audio stream).
Lot's of rock bands use that to good effect.

What he meant was, connect your speakers to some external device, (ipod, or phone) and increase your speaker volume to about for example 70% and then fix it back to the PC and see if it distorts. If it does, its a problem with the sound card.

I wouldn't say screwed. It's onboard. I've come across plenty of onboard sound that can barely push a set a headphones enough. This is why most speakers meant for a PC are powered.

Yea your right. i should have said that the onboard may be low quality. I have had good luck with onboard sound and they have always worked great! maybe its just me?

It depends on what onboard it is. The VIA Xfi chip on my CH4 is amazingly good and what I use now. I found that most Realtek onboard just doesn't get loud enough for me.

The problem is the lack of an amplifier. If you have a stereo system at home, try that.

Most cheap powered speakers cannot run at max without distorting the reason is that the speaker output from the sound card is higher than an average line out. And since most of the systems are built for use with a line level source they will begin to cut out when used from the speaker out, at max, of a sound card.
