I have several high amperage fans coming. I know I can hook them to a molex for full speed, but how can I control them? All the controllers have a limited current well below what these draw. Here are the fan specs:

I think I might just run the 6224 at 12v from molex...as an intake, but not sure.
I also noticed that fan controllers don't put out 12v, but -10% usually which would be 10.8v like my Sniper case's built in controller does. :(

I mean do I need to make a fan controller from scratch? Diodes resistors etc...or is that what steals the voltage?

I think I will run them at 7v from molex till i figure out how to make it adjustable with a full 12v available.

Bassman, check out the Sunbeam Rheobus Extreme (I linked to the black one since your case is black, but there's a silver version here. It has no problem running six Delta FFB1212EHEs on one of my systems.

Thanx I was looking at that one. I saw the 12v +- 10% written in there.
Have you ever measured to see what v you get a full on?

I haven't measured it, would do so for you right now but I don't have anything handy to measure it with.

Also, you may know this already but just to be sure: pulling too much juice at 7v (assuming you are running +12v to +5v to get it) can potentially damage a PSU. This feeds current back into the 5v rail, which is okay if your system draws more 5v power from the PSU than you are feeding back into it. I'm not sure what the exact 5v draw of your system is—you'd probably be fine with a few of those fans at 7v—but it's worth being extra careful.

You can probably find it for less from some place else, i just wanted to quickly link it, but this is a great manual controller for high powered fan's :rockout:

My $0.02 OFC :toast:

EDIT I see TIGR beat me to it lol Truly a great lil' unit, never had any issue with the one's i have used/owned :)

Honestly I dont know much about the psu, and dont want to have to ram my new one. Thanx for the warning and I will research that.

Damn! I would have picked one up if I had seen that in time too.

Will let you know if I spot any particularly good deals on it.

Does anyone know how many amps, watts the CM Sniper cases built in fan controller is capable of? I hope to maybe use that till I build or buy a different controller.

Personally I wouldnt push the fan controller on the Sniper for anything more than what they already have hooked up.

On a second note, yes fan controllers will never allow a full 12V through, every one I have tested has been at or just below 11V.

When I took my stock case fans (200mm blue ones) from full blast on controller to straight 12v I noticed a large improvement in airflow, albeit no way to lower it now.
I Cant believe there isnt a way to control voltage without dropping voltage in the process.

Sure you can do it like that, why not? Only thing is it isn't nice n' purdy  I have done that a few time's myself over the year's and never had any trouble. Just make sure you get the right rheostat

If you do decide to run a FC i would highly reccomend staying away from the digital stuff, i have owned 2 digital controller's and they both crapped out on me! One was Enermax and the other was Thermalbreak :nutkick: Went to analog and never looked back :)

I have some of these, tried it out on a small fan and it worked, only it gets pretty warm.

I think the formula is v/A= Ohms where as A= max load from fan
If I run 2 1.5A (or 18W) fans then I should be able to turn the voltage as low as 6v?

I suck with #'s so no help there, sorry :( They will get warm, it is a by-product as you are introducing resistance what you "shave off" become's heat. Just don't place it on any thing that has a low melting/burning point....

Just make sure you use one's with enough capacity, i use 6w that i got from Radio shack

Mine r 50 watt, i figured that would handle 2 18w fans with some extra headroom

After researching more( because l-pad was so hot) I discovered that there are 3 things...rheostat potentiometer and l-pad. I knew that, but thought they were all the same. I have an l-pad which maintains a steady 8 ohms and is made for a/c i think and not dc. The pot is for fading between two sides as in a balance knob on a stereo, and finally a rheostat unlike the pot has only 1 path for current to flow, turn it up and resistance decreases unlike the l-pad whose resistance is fixed.
So to sum it up the l-pad wont work long term without burning up, and I need a rheostat.
this is what I have found so far.

Too expensive for my budget though.
