My WD 650GB black drive is crapping out on me as I speak.

I picked up a 1TB 64mb WD Black to replace the fuged HD.

Im going to be using Acronis True Image I D/L'd from the Western Digital site.

My question is what do I need to do to move everything from the 640 to the 1TB drive?

Do I need to partition the new drive ? or will Acronis do it for me?

Help Please as This drive is not far from self destruction ....

I never heard a drive sound this way.

Thank you. :respect:

Brad, usually what I do is go to disk management under administrative tools while new drive is on and hooked up

See how drive D: has just one volume unlike drive C: that has the "system reserved" and the main volume? Well if the new drive you hooked up looks like my Drive C:, just delete the 100MB partition that it has so you are left only with one big partition. This makes sure the drive is not bootable and that there is nothing but what you are transferring in there on it. Although that is created when Windows is installed on it, I don't think new drives have to be partitioned at all as they should not have any. I'll let someone else chime in as I'm not too experience with partitions and stuff, I just gave you advise based on what I do and works for me.

This is what I do and it works great for me. Not sure if Acronis does this for you bro, sorry I've never used it.

I would be surprised if you get a valid image from a failing drive. It's up to you but I would back up important files first, then attempt to image. As you say, the drive is failing so every second it runs is an opportunity lost to back up.

Everything copied to my surprise, I think the sub zero temps where I had Ice in the res to it's toll on the hard drive.

You ppl think I should defrag and optimize the new drive now?

Defraged and optimized now and...
All I gota say is WOW!

I thought I had a great drive when I picked up the 640 GB WD black drive, then Mussles posted a run of hd tune in a old thread of mine and I think it was a 1 or 1.5TB model...

Well it blew my upgraded hd outta the water big time!

I now under stand what he was going on about..... Thanks Cranky moderator :toast:

Everything is running way smoother now, Wayyyyyy...smoother :D

It's no SSD but hey, at least it's not going to degrade after time.

Here is a run of the pooped out 640 black

Now the 1TB Black with double the Cashe

Nice respectable boost I'd think? :rockout:

Glad to see it's working fine bro. My SSD was pooping on me since I bought it, trying to RMA it. I have it out of the rig and my issues are gone.

I just went from the 640 black to that same drive, did you notice a noise increase? This thing makes some old school sounds when it really gets going.

Na this drive is real quiet, the 640's heads seemed real loud accessing the disk's platters.

I don't know what to make of that, my 640 black never made a peep. I guess it depends on the batch? Be weird if there really is that much variance between the same drive model.
