Toshiba Satellite A135-S4677 not posting

Okay, so long story short I took apart a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4677 to replace the TIM and clean out any dust. I know I put it back together right as I used a guide and this isn't my first time taking a laptop all the way down.

Now for some reason, it won't post at all, I can hear everything else spinning up, HDD, disk drive, etc. But it's not posting at all and it isn't beeping like I told it to do when booting. Yes, I checked the video cable, it's plugged in correctly.

Are there some special hot keys I should be hitting, or do somewhere along the line I mess it up?

I just took it all the way back down again... Everything appears to be fine, no crimped cables, nothings disconnected that I just didn't disconnect.... Hmmmm...

try booting it before you put the case back on maybe shorting?

EDIT: try clearing CMOS too. but oter than that idk unless static killed something.

How the heck do I clear the cmos on this thing, remove the battery is the only way from the looks of it. Hmmm. Don't think it was static, I've yet to kill anything that way. Maybe it is a short, I'll check stuff again and clear the cmos.

the cmos is usually similar to desktops the battery might be in a type of pouch with 2 wires comming out of it and plugging into the mobo. it looks like a fan header. sometimes their are also cmos jumpers on the board.

As soon as I saw "Toshiba Satellite not posting" I began having flashbacks. I had one, well I still have one that decided to quit on me after a TIM change on the CPU. I can take it all out of the case and do a "cardboard" box build and it will run like butter. I put it back in the case, she wont post. I have tried everything I know to try and figure it out. I finally just gave up and shoved it into the closet never to be seen again. I do know the gfx is very touchy once its been played with. This might give me the strength to give mine another shot. Maybe.

I looked for jumpers near the battery, don't see any, just going to remove the battery and put it back in after 10-20 minutes.

*Edit-I can't remove the battery, it's welded in.

Going to try booting it on a box like blkhogan did.

It boots out of "case" just fine, in bios on it now. : /

blkhogan, looks like the same issue as you....

metal insulation tape is used on alot of internals on laptops usually around the HDD or holding ribbons on. look at these areas again. also remember the matallic paintjob can cause shorts. wrap a penny in wireing tape and put it between any place the board looks like it might touch. re-assemble.

Nice idea. I gotta try mine again now. Im tearing my bottomless closet apart looking for it now.

I taped a few places that I think may be trouble spots, lucky for me I didn't clean the shell of the case of dust and I found some places that looked like they were touching something they shouldn't be.

So far so good, I've been able to get it to post and I'm slowly going thru the process of putting it back together piece by piece, so I can rule out any screws, etc. of shorts.

Um, tape in those photos above fixed the issue. That's what's up, the laptop has been working fine since.

Yeah, I got it running. MX-2 helped drop temps by almost 7*C under load. 3*C drop while "idle".

Im still having problems with mine staying stable. When through and did all the steps that Edward did. System ran for a number of days with no shut downs. Then on I think day 5 I can home to a locked system w/ BSOD. Ran the code through google and came back with a hardware issue. Pulled everything apart and put it all under my magnifier so I could see any possible damage. I found on the motherboard a couple of spots around the cpu socket that look suspect. They look a little burnt. I am going to clean up the areas with some cleaner and see whats going on, just havent had time to do it yet.

Ok old post i know but it was really really a big help

I found this post really helpful - cheers guys - i had the same issue - the laptop wouldnt post when booting, all the lights on and nothing showing. So i took the laptop appart with the help of this site http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a135/remove-mainboard-1.htm

I then read something about leaving the power on with the blackscreen for a length of time i was really sceptical about this but i left the laptop with power for around 45mins to an hour low and behold it gave a loud beep! I then restart and sure enough post and bios!

I then applied edwards trick of using some insulation tape to ensure no grounding was occuring and put the laptop back together and it runs like a dream!

Thought I would add my posting incase it helps anyone else with this kind of laptop (toshiba satellite A135-S5677)
