Hi,

First time poster here. I purchased a budjet gaming pc awhile ago when I needed something fast and had less than $800 budjet. I purchased this pc here.

It is running great besides the graphics card. I wish I did some more researched and spent a little extra money for a better psu and card but I was limited at the time and I am not a very technical person.

I am running a 4202 psu and I looked for more info like the volts on the rail or whatever and couldnt find the info but lets just assume its cheap?

Anyways I got $250 and I want the best graphics card I can get, which may make me buy a psu and have less money for the card. Ideally I would want this card but it would leave me almost nothing for a psu.

Palit NE5X460HF1102 GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Sonic ...

Being not very technical I am a little nervous about installing a new psu more than I am about a graphics card but it looks like I am out of options.

I need help ------- ideas, combos, cards with great power and less psu requirments or good psu's and cards ....anything with my budjet that would give me the best computer while understanding I am not very technical.

ps, That card saying at least 450w, means just the card, not including everything else? So that would defiantly mean I can not come close to running that card and I def need a new psu

Your PSU isn't going to cut it. It is very, very cheap and only has 14 amps on the 12v rail.

I don't think it even has a PCI-E connector, so you will need something different.

This card would be better/cheaper: EVGA 768-P3-1362-AR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superc...

..and try to find a solid PSU within your budget.

I would doubt that 420W PSU would work unless it has a good +12v amp put out.

Once you add the costs of the video card, PSU and delivery you would of spent almost $1,000. Granted this rig will do everything you want gaming wise and is pretty powerful but its definitely not $1,000 worth of power.

Anyways,

That OCZ PSU will work fine with that video card.

Here is cheaper PSUs which will also work fine.

Antec BP550 Plus 550W $60
Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2...

That OCZs alright, But Its a great deal and has plenty of power.
Though you could always get a 400CX.

Even though that psu would work, it is still under recommended specs. I wouldn't suggest it.

With a quality 500W+ (like that BP550) it would definitely last longer for him and be better, but considering his budget is only $250, minus the $200 for a GTX460, that's probably the best PSU hes gonna get for $50. 30A is well enough for a GTX460..

BUt If the OP can spend more, go ahead. Its a great investment.

I am not sure if you are trying to make me feel bad or help; or both. I realized and said outright I did not do enough research. :banghead: Thank you for your suggestions though, that psu does look like a better option.

The reason for my post in addition to finding about my current psu was to ask what you guys would do in my situation with a $250-300 budget? I am looking for the best psu and card combo.

With that budget I'd either do 1 of 2 things:

1.) Spend upto $70 (at most) on a PSU, one of the ones suggested already.

And

2.) Buy a $200 Nvidia GTX 460

Or

3.) I would half the budget and pick up a ATI 5770 for $150, or 5750 for $130 or the Nvidia GTS 250 1GB for $100

It really comes down to which resolution, which games and how long you expect the card to last before upgrading. But generally speaking the the above mentioned cards in option 3 will play most if not all of today's games relatively well and considering their low price tags they are the best bang for your buck if you want a solution for upto 1 year with the intention of replacing it then. The cards in option 3 might very well work without a PSU upgrade too and hence saving more money.

Thanks Dent1,

If the ATI 5770 really would run on my psu I think that is defiantly the best option. What do you think my odds are it will?

The Radeon HD 5770's power consumption levels were about what we were expecting. The idle consumption was a little higher than we would have wanted, that said, with a load result of 284 watts (for the complete system) the Radeon HD 5770 uses considerably less power than the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 graphics cards

According to Techspot it idles at 171w and is stressed at 284w, they tested the card on a far better psu - do you think my low end 420w can handle it?

I like the card, looks like I will be able to play crysis on medium settings and a lot of games maxed out with decent fps and def starcraft 2.

There is not reason why the ATI 5770 wouldnt work.

That is not correct, no video card idles at 284w, even the new high end 5970 which is essentially two GPUs stuck on one PCB idles @ less than 40w.

According to TechPowerUp's review the 5770 idles @ 17w, averages @ 92w with a peak of 106w, so its safe to say the PSU is up for the task.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GeForce_GTX_460_Cyclone_OC_768_MB/29.html

By no means is your PSU good in terms of the reliability like you'd get from brands like Antec, Thermaltake, OCZ etc, but I see no reason why it couldnt run a 5770 without issue.

I like the card, looks like I will be able to play crysis on medium settings and a lot of games maxed out with decent fps and def starcraft 2.

Iam running a slightly slower OC'd 4850 and Crysis runs at medium just fine, although it can lag occasionally on the further levels but its more than playable. Other games play on high settings or a mixture of medium and high settings with no lag. The 5770 is enough to max out most games TBH. It isnt the fastest card but its enough to get you through 2010 to mid 2011. Saying that though the GTS 250 1 GB performs almost as fast as the 5750 and 5770 and is between $30-50 cheaper so value for money its also worth looking at.

His current PSU with even a 5770 is a bad idea. I highly doubt that 14 amps is sufficient for that card. It seems that the card actually requires around 20 amps.

I'm with everyone else. I suggest your first upgrade be a decent ~500W PSU. My 2 favorite PSU companies are Enermax or Corsair.

Considering the 5770 is $150,

Maybe its best $100 is spent on a 1 GB GTS 250 instead and the other $50 is spent on the PSU. I feel that he'd get away with out the PSU but considering that nearly $1,000 will be spent overall its better to be safe than sorry.

But then again Erocker, wouldnt Newegg provide him with warranty if his current PSU fries his components? his system is new.

Not if he throws in something new that stresses the PSU too far. That would be like Chevy replacing a Corvette that you equipped with nitrous and blew the engine.

I think CyberPower won't honor the warranty since the original PSU that came with system was rated for the components originally insatalled by the OEM. So by replacing it with a "new" video card would definitely void the warranty if it happens to "fry" the components since the original PSU is not rated for a higher wattage GPU.:)

I ended up going with a 530w power supply for 50 and the EVGA 460 SC 768mb card which looked like it out performed the 5770. So live and learn, after spending 950 total I hope I have a system that can run games on hugh for at least a year. Next time I will defiantly do more research! Thanks guys

I just spike with customer support, I can still change my order as long as I do it today on sunday. What's wrong with the raidmax 530!!?? 400 reviews with 4 star rating averagd, granted there were some bad ones saying it went out after six months but I even saw those in the corsair reviews. Plus I ended up getting a coupon for the raidmax bringing it down to 34.99. If its that bad I will change it but is it just like buying a kia instead of a toyota I'm keeping it.

Fill this out in its entirety and let us know what kind of a wattage it gives you, please.

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

The thing about cheaper PSUs is, they are rated for X amount of watts at a certain temperature, but in real life tests, if they are asked for that many watts, they will fail, and some of the cheaper ones will fail catastrophically and take other components with them. Companies like Corsair, Enermax, and other top-tier companies have PSUs that are rated at their wattage at 50C, and most are actually underrated to ensure that they won't fail, and if they do fail, they usually just take themselves out rather than other components.

My recommendations for a VERY solid power supply:

CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certi...

ENERMAX Tomahawk ETK500AWT 500W ATX12V V2.2 AirGua...

CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Cert...

CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 SLI Ready Cro...

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready...

In the end, you would probably be okay with the PSU you went with, but here at TPU, we know how much of a pain in the ass it is to lose hardware over a bad PSU choice, so we tend to urge people to spend the extra $20-30 for some clean power for their system.

Min. 405w and 455w recommended at 90% - it makes comeplete sense about the psu's what you guys are saying _ spent a little extra money now for less of a headache later. But the raidmax psu should be better quality than my original psu right? So even with the new graphics card I should be in better shape. The raidmax had a lot more amps on the 12v rails and 5v and 3.5v
