Gtx 460 sli

Anyone else feel this is the combo to beat? I read the review from here along with other sites and these are stellar performers. The Asus version hits 930 core on air and the 1 GB version holds it's own. OCed with SLI they hang with two 470s. I believe watercooled and highly OCed, they hang with two 480s with much less heat and power consumption. I thought I wanted two 480s, but 850 watts just to cards is ridiculous. I want to do water cooling with lights and all that bad ass stuff, but that would take a lot of power with 480 SLI.

I know. It's not as bad as the 480, but it also has bad gas mileage. Oh, you have one. More power to you Have you thought about SLI?

why not take ur $400 for the pair in SLI and buy one large card (480 or 5XXX) then when you feel the need, drop into a second really cheap in 3-6 months from now

they run really high fps are the highest settings at about any resolution.

I just read one of the links at the bottom and posters were saying not all games support SLI and it sometimes had stability problems? What kinda crap is that? One monster just sounded a lot better.

I dont have any gaming issues. The games that do use it, use it, and those that cant, dont.

I really wanted dome 460s, but now i have a 480, i would be getting a 15% gain. But then again 2x480 is awesome

I might 2 then if not satisfied use one for physx and nother to replace my 8800GT

Even with your discouraging comments on my PSU not being able to handle it.(im still almost certain it can with no overclocks)

I may not have specified, but my numbers were balls out numbers. Not Ocd it should do ok.

On a side note, when I went water, I could clock the CPU higher, possibly I got a bad 1KW, but that extra power came from somewhere

The thing with the 460's in Sli are..... yes they are a fantasic buy for the performance you can expect, probably the best combo out there at the moment, but unless you game at 19XX and above as shown in W1z's review.... your just not getting your value (read scaling) to make the investment worth while over the powerful single card solution.

Judging by the OP's specs, maybe he is trying to gain e-peen Im kidding, really I am.

Good point tho tatty, granted he is going to see the jump in synthetics, he may not durring regular game play.

Tom's 2,000 dollar PC from June actually used two Ref. Gigabyte GTX 470's with a Silverstone 750W PSU (DA750) with a 60A +12V.

With the system OC'ed the CPU and GPU pulled 858W, 619W GPU, 450W CPU.
With no OC the CPU and GPU pulled 684W, 582W GPU, 288W CPU.

"Overclocked power consumption caused even greater concern, as it appears to exceed the power supply's rated capacity. A quick check of the DA750 specification sheet put us at some ease however, since a shift from 50% to 100% load causes the power supply's efficiency to drop from 80% to 77%. That means it was only outputting between 660 and 680W at the above reading, and our remaining discomfort is caused by the idea that we're wasting nearly 200W of power in the conversion process."

I recently brought a 24" 1080p. Sounds like a good deal or the 480 still better? I'm still kinda thinking about if a game isn't SLI compatibility, I be using on of those. I currently don't pay the energy bill yet, but doesn't SLI 480 really spike it?

To be honest, i don't know of any mainstream games released in the last couple of years that are not SLi compatible, perhaps the odd one has issues on release and then corrected by the fisrt game patch but I don't play a huge amount of games so I could be wrong, I think these days it's more about how games scale with Sli and really utilise that 2nd GPU.

By preference I would always choose a single card solution, however I have had loads of Crossfire and SLi setups, simply because once in a while, a card comes along, that is cheap, powerful and scales very well, the 8800GT was one of those...the 460 may well be one of those as well..... however, the concept of crossfire/SLi was always as a cost effective upgrade path from a single card, not necessarily as an origional 2 card purchase.

That's a killer combo!! And they consume so little power, they need the same as a single 480! So I guess even a good 600-650Watt psu (such as the corsair hx620) should be enough to power the two cards.what do you guys think

I understand where the guys are coming from with one card solution and the possibility of adding another. At the same time, the 460 is kinda cheap, power efficient, and pound for pound killing everything. I would love to see some liquid cooled numbers.

When you look at cost effectiveness in relation to performance it is easy to be positive and see how great 2 of these are..... and they really are, however whenever I compare a 2 card setup to the single GPU option I look at things slightly differently, lets take these 460's in SLi and compare the price against a more powerful single GPU, the first think I look at is the scaling, as an example in this case, at 1920 res (mine) I get what..... 72% across the board, first thing I do therefore is ADD 28% to their price (because I am losing 28% worth of performance that my money has paid for), in comparision to the single GPU solution which is acheiveing 100% scaling for obvious reasons..... if my price and performance thereafter is still comparable then it's pretty safe to say it's a worthwhile buy....... well i understand what I mean!
