I'm not new to the overclocking world, but I haven't been overclocking recently. I was able to get 2.2GHz on a 1.8GHz Sempron 130nm, a 22% overclock. I sold that processor to my roommate and bought a Sempron 64 3400+ 2.0GHz 90nm (Not much improvement, but it was 64-bit and fairly cheep). I was just wondering what I can expect for an overclock.

I'm open to a bit of volting, but I've heard Semprons don't do much with extra voltage. Memory will do about 250MHz, but I'm not sure. Running at 3-3-3-8. I tried running at CL 3.5, but the BIOS wouldn't post (I am a noob at some things.)

Sempron 64 3400+ Sck754 90nm (http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=141776)

DFI LanParty UT nForce3 250gb
Corsair XMS PC3200 2x512MB (CMX512-3200C2)

Just looking for suggestions.

see how far you can go and still remain stable at stock volts then slowly up voltages and frequency,i would set your memory to 166mhz @ 3-3-3-8 to take it out of equation when overclocking the processor....its a long process download Prime95 so u can use that for stability testing. i would set my multiplyer to 6 if possible and see how high the FSB will go and still be able to post and get into windows without crashing or locking up when u figure out your max fsb see how high your memory will go without crashing, make sure you set your HTT to 3 so your HyperTransport doesnt go over 1000 there is a really good overclocking guide on the forums check out overclocking and cooling must have programs and links for overclocker and the OC bible is there

Running just barely 2.4GHz on stock voltages. CPU is roughly 30c on air cooling.
239.6x10=2396MHz
I'm aiming to beat (or match) that Athlon 64 3000+ in the extreme oc clubhouse thread. I tired 241, but it crashed last time. Going to give it another go after I post this.

the highest i have gotten my athlon 64 x2 on air is 2.74 Ghz @ 1.4v memory was set to 333mhz @ 3-3-3-8 2.6v in bios but was actually 550mhz because of the overclock.remeber the memory controller is on the CPU so in my opinion its alot more complex,so you could try giving it a little more voltage and see if you can hit 240,remeber to run prime95 for at least 5 to 10 minutes and see if u get errors, when u get it to where u want it to be run prime95 for a few hours if possible and watch temps

Went up to 1.54 volts (110% voltage). Not a single FSB higher. I'll try setting a memory divider and playing with the hyper-transport tomorrow. Thanks.

its a s754 they cant handle a mem clock of over ~240 it cant post higher than that drop your ram back a notch and HTT as well

I remember from playing around with an older processor (Althon XP 2000+ on the socket A) the difference between your memory locking up and your CPU locking up. Memory would give you artifacts (when doing things like opening your start menu) and CPU would work for a second or two, but just lock up. In my DFI LanParty UT board, phoenix BIOS, what represents my HT link? I noticed a few dividers.. LTD to FSB, Mem to FSB (set at 1:1 now), CPU to FSB (the multiplier, obviously). Looking at CPU-Z, it looks like my HT link is 4x. I remember trying to set this to 3 inside nVidia's nTune program. Didn't like it. I'll try again through the BIOS.

You're on the right track. Set HT to 3x so it doesn't go above 800Mhz.

Also try lowering your memory, it's running CPU/10 or set to 200Mhz (3400+ runs at 2000Mhz). Try to lower it to 166, which will be a /12 multiplier on your CPU.

Here's my 3300+ running at 2.3Ghz, Prime stable. I live in a hot climate, so I had to trade off heat for Mhz. You should get 2.4Ghz out of the Palermo core.

Well, after a few attempts, I set my LTD (aka HT) to 3x, set a /12 divider, increased my cpu voltage by 0.14 volts and increased my chipset and memory voltage by 0.1 volts, and had everything running slower than it's 'normal speed' (except the CPU), and still crashed at 240. I even tried setting my CPU multiplier to 9x (instead of the original 10x) and I couldn't even post. I thought it was only soft-locked. 10x or below, right?

@cdawall: That limiter rings a bell, but I thought it was for the CPU, not memory. I was only able to get 235FSB stable on my Sempron 3100+ (130um). My roommate, who bought the processor off me, can't overclock as high (same exact everything except a skyhawk 600w PSU, different hard drives, OCz Gold PC3200, and an X800xt). Yeah, I think I remember a story about keeping computer builders from OCing a slower Sempron and selling it at the price of a higher-end Sempron.

@Knaff: You read my mind. It's good to know that at least someone else agrees that I did the right thing.

@Everyone: Just filled out System specs. I've been very impressed with the price/performance of the Sempron line, but I think the extra L2 and unlocked-nature of the Athlon is starting to appeal to me right about now. I doubt I'll be able to put something down in the extreme overclockers club. *tear*

Maybe check your memory command rate, 1T or 2T, in the BIOS.

I get to 2.4Ghz if I use 2T, but my SuperPi score doesn't increase and I have to increase the volts and therefore hit 60deg running Prime.

So, I run at 2.3Ghz with 1T.

You shouldn't need to increase your chipset or RAM voltages - you're not overclocking them, so they don't need extra juice.

I have no idea why it wouldnt POST using 9x, if your MB supports mutiplier changing it should work ? Mine doesn't, so I leave it at 10 - and it's a nice even number ;)

BTW my SuperPi score is 41s, FYI

True the dividers set should mean I won't have to worry about memory and the chipset, but it was more of a "just in case" idea.

I think I'm set to 2T. I thought it was supposed to be 1T, but CPU-Z won't report that on the SPD settings. I thought I heard that any single-sided stick can do 1T, but two-sided memory was usually limited to 2T. Any explanation on that? I'd imagine that my stick of corsair is double-sided, hence 2T (although it's hard to see under the stock heatsync).

Edit: 60C?! What CPU cooler? I get about half that!

60c using the stock cooler....the ambient temp here is 29c with 70% humidity. When I turn on the air-con it drops to below 50c. :toast: Now where's my ice cold beer ??

Actually, I read that the difference on an A64 system 1T v 2T isn't that much (4%), but it seems you should get higher clocks with 2T - look for it in the bios where your memory settings are.

CPU-Z reports 2T. It's just the SPD that doesn't.

Hmm.. I have one of the stock coolers somewhere around here. They look a bit generic. They're good for the price, though. They do the job. I'm a fan of spending half the value of the processor on the cooling, though. It's a bit pointless, but at least it looks fast, right?

This is the HS (of course I put a lick of AS5 on it)

http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1926

Sure, get a better one if you can, but the Palermo core does runs cool.

Back to your overclocking advertures, if you're set at 2T, I'm not sure there's much else you can do - maybe you've reached the limit on your CPU :twitch:

2.4ghz is about average for a sempron so dont feel bad they just dont oc the same as an athlon its the core no matter what kinda volts and cooling most cant break 2.4-2.6ghz

Yeah.. That 235-240 FSB limit is starting to sound more and more familiar. I suppose I'll just be going for an Athlon next time.

Yeah.. I was going to say ClockGen (get it at www.cpuid.com), but I can't guarantee you'll get much out of a laptop.
