In the run up for NVIDIA's September 12th launch of mainstream GeForce 400 series products, Chinese technology portal Zol.com.cn shared a picture of the company's GF106 graphics processor, which will be at the heart of several mainstream SKUs, including the talked about GeForce GTS 450. The first three desktop implementations of the GF106 are known to be the GeForce GTS 440, GTS 445, and GTS 450. Of these, the GTS 445 and GTS 440 will be launched first, with the GTS 450 launched just a little later.

The 40 nm GF106 GPU returns to a square package, with a die measuring around 240 mm², which makes it about 45% bigger than that of AMD's Juniper GPU, on which the company's ATI Radeon HD 5700 series is based on. Zol.com.cn suggested that the performance of the GTS 450 in DirectX 9/10 applications can be expected to be comparable to that of the GeForce GTX 260 (216 SP). After launching the GTS 450, NVIDIA will continue on its launch itinerary for the year with a value-segment GF108 GPU.

45% bigger die than the Juniper, ouch.
nVidia won't make money with this.

yups 45% bigger ??? its GTX2xx alll over again, its mean chip designer in nvdia really lacking, and if it bigger then it means hotter, and consume more than HD5770, especially in this price segment people usually have crap PSU

i think nvidia is in a situation where they're like "wtf...how did we mess up this bad?, how is ATI making a chip as good as our's and way more efficient than ours with a lot smaller die?"

i bet my comp that the engineers at Nvidia are going nutz and are being crazily pressured to up the performance. Honestly i can see nvidia slowly transitioning towards a smaller die like ATI but with the same if not better punch.

My prediction is nvidia goes away from the monolithic design but keep their current performance and builds on it, probly even changing their shader design.

Well its a very good architecture its just at the wrong nm. Fermi should really kick ass once 28mn comes. Its just hard to scale Fermi at its current size without water.

Wait, performance comparable to a GTX 260 in DX 9 and 10? Doesn't the 5770 do that in DX11?

but...the GF106 should be cheaper or around HD 5770 price. $140-$175. so competition from nvidia for that price range.

I'm betting ati will hit 28 nm at the same time or sooner, so fermi's unlikely to ever do much in the way of ass kicking.

Yes but Nvidia will have time making this new architecture efficient and even more powerful by the time 28nm rolls around. ATI will be rolling out a new architecture and will not have the experience with Northern Islands like Nvidia will have with Fermi. Thats why i think the 1st GPUs release on 28nm will favor Nvidia.

Actually they will have some experience. They're doing the architecture switch in two steps. The cards coming out this winter will be a hybrid of current and future architectures because 40nm is going to be the only process available for well into next year.

5770s are down to $135 now, and will be even cheaper by the time this comes out.

The newer revisions of Fermi beat out ati cards in their segment for power consumption. Look at the GTX460 compare it to the 5850/5830. I fail to see why you think GF106 will be any different?

Check your information http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-graphics-card-review/11

The 460 1GB uses about 33 watts more than a 5850 at load. They are not direct competition either the 5850 is considered a faster GPU closer to a Nvidia 470.

maybe open box, but i'll never purchase open box as i don't feel like takin the risk. Retail is still 149.99. so my statement stands when considering retail and oem.

Do you mean this one where its still 11 watts higher than a 5850 at load or 10% more on average?

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_460_1_GB/29.html

Sorry about that I've been picking the first single card review which was for the Cyclone version which edges them out slightly. Fermi does a lot better with lower temperatures. So with the cyclone cooler I can see how it would edge them out. Reference cards have slightly higher power consumption than the 5850.

That really doesn't mean anything, pretty much every GPU out there does better with lower temps.
There is no point comparing apples with oranges either.
