3870 Artifacts & BSODs

Hey Guys,
I recently acquired a 3870 512mb GDDR4 card (ATI single slot reference card), and it recently started producing coloured lines down the screen when it is powered on with the PC, and then Windows BSOD's upon start-up; I've taken the cooler off and cleaned it up and replaced the TIM to no avail; any likelyhood it can be saved guys? BIOS flash or replacement cooler or something? *fingers crossed*

Did you recently change drivers? Tried old ones?

I think however your card is dead. Just trying to be optimisitic for you. :toast:

Yeah tried that, but it can't be the drivers as it artifacts as soon as the comp posts :/

the coloured lines are usually a sign of memory corruption on the graphics card. if the cards out of warranty then theres nothing you can do asside from bin it. I had the same thing happen to an old 9700Pro

To add: Make sure you are using a known good power supply. Good meaning, enough wattage and not too old.

Was getting the same thing with my current 4870 just recently until I switched out a 3 year old silverstone.

I've tried it in a rig with a 700w OCZ PSU and the rig in System Specs, with the same outcome

Yeah, unfortunately it is toast. If the card is an HIS good luck with RMA. Theirs is a pain in the a**.

the 3870 is an old card. I dont think they would even accept an RMA on it. theyl probably just send a 5770 out to you or something. I dont know. but repairing an old card like that hardly seems worth it. ontop of that. the 3870 hasnt held its value after so long so they will probably charge you a small fee for a new card too

Thanks guys, it was a sapphire card btw, and its ok, I got the card for free, so can't really expect too much, just wondered if it was at all possible to save it, but if its dead, its dead. Thanks again guys
