Switch from 4890s to 5770s

Too be honest I wouldn't switch, You'll lose alot of performance for little to no difference in graphic quality right now since DirectX 11's implementation is still primitive.

I'd wait for a price drop in DX11 cards or just wait past DX11 all together.

Unless some uber pwnge DX11 game comes out then you figure it out lol.

NO... better to go 5850 crossfire or 460 SLI ... but remember 5770 crossfire will consume very less power compared to 2 4890s ...

Power is no issue, I think thats kind of obvious since people told me 850watt is overkill for me..

Do it it's worth i just downgraded from a 5850 to a 4870 and direct x 11 is worth it...trust me.

The fact that you are asking the question makes me wonder whether you *need* to upgrade of *want* to upgrade. I think you will do very well with a 5970

If you can sell the 4890s for good money (or you have other plans for them), why not? but if the 4890 is going to sleep in a nice coffin, I think you should not upgrade.

personally i would just wait it out and see what happens, everyone can rabble on about DX11 all they want but the fact still remains that 98% of games on pc are currently still chugging along in DX9.0 C or lower.

Quite right mate, a lot of these decisions are motivated by the *want* factor. Like myself, I'm deciding whether I should upgrade or not, even though I don't game anymore, just playing some old stuff. Kinda silly but I guess its the upgrade itch. :laugh:

Anyways back to the subject, I'd only do that switch if you can't afford better like some said above and accept the performance hit for dx11.

Sell the 4890's and grab a single GTX 460. I have played with 4890's and they don't scale well enough to justify running two IMO. If later you want more performance just grab a second GTX 460 for SLI. I am just using 5870's in my gaming rigs right now but the GTX 460 is the first card of DX11 land that I can really say is a great buy. I enjoy experiencing the latest tech though.

a 4890 cf to 460 would be a major downgrade plus my mobo is a cf only mobo.

I know. But I hated the stutter of multi-GPU configurations. Some people don't notice it but I always do. It is like frame loss but more inconsistent.

Why not move to i7 X58?

Your Q9550 sells used for more than the i7 920 on [H] and the i7 920 gives it a beat down performance wise. X58 boards can be had for cheap etc........

That would be a better upgrade for you in the long run than switching GPU's TBH. Only because the value of LGA775 high end is inflated right now.
