Could twitter and/or Facebook be the Forums of the future?

I recall back during the IRC days that many thought it was silly to post on a "forum". The idea of having to wait for a reply didn't sit well with some elitist. However as time went on forums became a popular way to communicate to the community. Now with Facebook and Twitter I wonder if we will see forums based websites use them as an alternate means ofr communication to the community? Hmm, I wonder if the authors who created these forums (or are they called vbulletins?) have plans to integrate this service on FB/Twitter?

twitter is like you put all forum posts on post-its into a box and explode it .. kinda impossible to have a serious discussion

facebook seems too personal to aggregate non-personal discussions

and irc FTW .. nothing as robust as irc .. when the web goes down and the world stops, irc will still be running fine

I haven't done any chat sessions for YEARS!!!!

I almost for got about IRC, but I found a cool old site that still maintains old telnet chat sessions a week ago. Pretty sweet, and it got me thinking. Dial up sucked, but windows still supports PPP and with some hax it will support other protocols, so............

You can't really compare them imo. A facebook that looked like a usual forum would be a nightmare to spend time in. And a forum that looked like FB would also be horrible. Both are good in their own place.
