I'm wanting to upgrade!

Hey Fellas. I had a thread here about what to build, it unfortunately suffered the wrath of W1zzards epic clean up

I didn't see any of the replies.

Basically, I'm starting from scratch. I have had the system in my profile which I built years ago now, and I'm now a noob to the whole pc scene. I haven't been involved in any of it for the last year at least.

I have a lot more time on my hands now. I'm wanting to get my hands dirty building a new rig.

Advise me guys! I'm willing to spend $2-2.5k Aus on a new system. I really want a brand new system from scratch. Don't really want to wait any longer, I want WAY more power. I don't mind if it will be outdated in 6 months, I just want a system to enjoy and have fun with.

Also going to get a 24" LCD, so hopefully it will be powerful enough for high res gaming.

I already have Win7.

I'm going to be spending alot of time here getting back into the swing of things. Looking forward to it

Also no mention of what the rig is going to be used for? from the sounds of it you just want something what will blow you away compared to your current rig... which is exactly what I went for when I upgraded (from the Athlon 6400+ era to my current system specs).

So as said post a few links and let us know what you actually want the rig for, if anything in particular?

hey there, itching to upgrade? love that feeling ,,, as of now, Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz and Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz seem pretty potent , Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz is also a solid choice. as for the video cards nvidia's recent gtx460 is available with custom coolers and high clocks, really a good buy, hope this helps a lil

Definitely want to be blown away compared to the current rig. Aiming for excellent gaming performance, and overclockability, so quality hardware with some clocking headroom, and a focus on cooling too.

I like the Antec P193 case so far. I want a quality case, more into the subtle styling though so Its tough.

The Fractal Design looks amazing, but the cheap price suggests the quality may not be as good as the Antec case? I LOVE the look of it though.

I do agree on the bump down to that board... Was the original one I looked at tbh.

However the GTX 480 is only $48 more than 2x GTX 460's so I thought that was a good choice to go for.

About the case: the Fractal Design case you pointed to, has got a Silver Award from the Dutch magazine/site Hardware.info a few months ago. Fractal Design is a rather new brand (from Sweden, I believe) and thus they can't as huge prices (since most people would rather opt for more known brands (Cooler Master etc.) with which they are more familiar). I don't think you have to worry about that case, though Hardware.info warned its readers, that because of the fact that it is designed to be as silent as possible (insulation, silent fans), the cooling performance is not extremely high. I could point to the digital version of the article on their website, but because HWI stopped translating their (Dutch) stuff into English I will not do so. Would be a bit pointless, doesn't it?

Looks like a solid build so far, if you could I would change the CPU to a i7 930 if your overclocking but if not, go for the i7 950 as its not much more expensive. Also I would recommend Enermax, Coolermaster or Noctua fans as they have good airflow and are very quiet and one more thing just so you know, the GTX 480's perform well, but run really loud and really hot coming from my experience so I would either go with a GTX 460 now or if your really want a GTX 480, I recommend you getting an aftermarket cooler for it as summer for us would kill these cards

When it comes to the fans: Scythe Slip Streams are awesome fans with decent airflow and low sound production. Their medium-priced here in the EU, so if you can find them there in Australia I recommend them strongly. Their are a better option than CM and Tricool fans, I think. I don't know how their performance compares to Noctua, but at least the prices are much lower.

About the GTX 480: Sparkle and Point of View have put a Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme Plus on it. The Point of View card is also slightly overclocked and is named "GTX 480 Ultra Charged TFC" (note the "TFC" which makes difference when it comes to the cooler you get). if you dont mind dropping down some stuff, not advising on what thats your decsion this is just a recommendation on my part. Get 2 of the exact same hard drives and run them RAID 1 so that you have double read speed(helps in game load up times) and a backup drive. then install windows on probably a 40-60gb solid state drive, this combination will increase speeds of a single harddrive dramatically, and based off the math i have done and help from the forums here, going from my WD 640gb blue to the setup above will cut my boot/load time by around 50-70%, which with the system you have listed would be freakin insane. just a recommendation

You're right. Raid 1 basically mirrors the data to an identical drive as a redundant backup if the first disk fails.

I'll look at the raid option. I do love the idea of the SSD drives, just trying to keep the system clean and simple.

I'll also have a look at the coolers for the GTX480. With the Antec fans, I just chose them because they match what is already in the case. Comes with 3 fans and 3 vacant mounts, I thought I would just fill them up. No hugely concerned with noise as the current system howls!

I have heard of people rigging their RAID 1 array to read from both drives at the same time, but it would still be RAID 1 so the drive's contents are identical in nearly every way
