I sold my older pc and my copy of Xp with it as well and I am unable to buy another copy at least until after the holidays. :shadedshu However I still have my very old copy of Win2kPro and I thought about using it to get by. But afaik Microsoft no longer supports it. :wtf: So besides the security crud to worry about, are there major performances (gaming wise) between the 2 OS's???? I am ignorant to this because I didnt start PC gaming till bout 2 years ago on my first gaming pc with XPpro. My only other option for the time being is Vista RC1. :shadedshu Thanks in advance.:toast:

Ms stopped posting patches/hotfixes &-or Service Packs for Windows ²k?

:(

* WoW²!!! is all I can say, I did not even KNOW this... you sure??

See, if this IS the case (edit)? I would say XP has a HELL of a lot better shot @ getting DirectX 10 added, than Win2k will now (provided it is really "dead" & all that).

APK

P.S.=> Performance diff.'s being "MAJOR", I would say no, but 2k is lighter overall, than XP...

HOWEVER, & this I know from "hands-on" experience?

XP supports gaming better overall, especially emulators or OLDER wares, for sound especially!

(I have 2 examples of this in fact here, Williams Arcade emulator games (not MAME32, but a Win9x software I run here for Defender/StarGate/Robotron 2084, etc.))

& w/out addons like "DOSBox" to give Win2k sounds in games like those & older DOS ones etc. et al ...

Trade-offs abound! apk

I might be mistaken and I know someone will correct me if I am wrong but what I keep recalling was support stopped in last June. Ill just double check Microsoft's website to make sure.

Please do & thanks!

:)

(Heck, I will myself, & ONLY because I still collect up all the addons/patches to/for Win2k here & I let that go "slack" a few months back during my nightly downloads, waiting for support to end for it, so I could gather up the LAST of them, & NOW is apparently that time)...

Yes, I like Win2k, better than XP in fact, & moreso w/ 3rd party sound compatibility fixes like DOSBox which I mention above & IT WORKS!

Still, I like 2k, but... not better than Windows Server 2003 (fully hotfixed/servicepack patched that is, & lol, even NOT patched!)

ANOTHER POINT TO CONSIDER (added it in edit above also):

See, if this IS the case (edit, about Win2k being 'dead' now & unsupported by MS)? I would say XP has a HELL of a lot better shot @ getting DirectX 10 added, than Win2k will now (provided it is really "dead" & all that).

Yes they have ended support for 2k and XP sp1. You can still download the updates that they made, but other than that it is dead. They also have introduced a ver of XP for 98 machines when they cut it for msdn(I think its the one that give you it) subscribers with is a hack down ver that will run on older machines.

I think that 2000 is a very good O/S when patched fully. There are something that are different over XP(Namely wizards and tools mostly) but with gaming it should work just as well as a XP system.

Thanks man - [517th]LiNKiN, & others for clueing me in here on this note!

Now I am hauling in the POST SP #4 (final servicepack) for Windows 2000 & this updates/hotfixes "rollup" package (makes it FAR easier than installing TONS of smaller fixes & rebooting for many of them, which I always do when they ask, adding more time to doing patches)...

:)

* Hopefully, this IS the last of them, for good & all...

APK

P.S.=> MOSTLY, I think these OS' are largely solid (2000/XP/Server 2003) & it is largely APPLICATION & script abilities hacks/cracks we see now, to Ms-Office & IE for example... things ARE 'getting there' imo, for security slowly but surely @ the OS level, & now?? Onward to the apps! apk

Wow just checked that site more closely and its was June 2005. lol This is the part that Im trying to figure out..
Microsoft is not ending support for Windows 2000. During the Extended Support phase, Microsoft continues to provide security hot fixes and paid support but no longer provides complimentary support options, design change requests, and non-security hotfixes.*

Yup, the case of a large corporate site being TOO complex... dates matter mostly!

If you think Ms' sites are bad this way? TRY OUT IBM!

(much more info. on them imo, but it's close in some areas).

:)

In any event, "fully dead", or not?

I was HOPING to get a "single file consolidated POST SP#4 rollup pack" that is current, & now? I have it... in this V2 model!

* Again, thanks, & good luck w/ your quest-research here.

I'm still using 2K, but I put XP on the new box I'm migrating to in a day or so. I'm gonna miss 2K, though; this is the same install I did four years ago, and it's never so much as given me a hiccup.
