False Positive for AV

I have had cyberdefender on my older WinXP computer, but now I am thinking of getting thier latest version 3.0 for my new Win7 computer:

http://pusz4frog.wordpress.com/2010...y-that-offers-customers-zero-day-gap-updates/

I like that the EDC offers super fast virus updates - Zero Day Gap.

I was looking at some review sites and some people wrote it is fake and makes false positives. The Fake part I don't understand, since I have cyberdefender and it is a real antivirus software, and has protected my for some time without getting a virus.

I found this video on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYryt773iH0

It was a test on a new laptop that shows cyberdefender found no errors.

So what is this false positive issue - is it really a problem with legitimate antivirus software?

It's common to nearly all anti-virus software these days to have some false positives, it's sort of a "Better safe than sorry" philosophy. Most good ones let you dismiss false positives though in my experience. An example would be a blacklisted EXE name. I used to play a game that had an executable names "Joshua.exe" Aparantly a common virus also used that name, and the AV went nuts. Fortunately in my case I was able to whitelist the application.

Mostly avs recognize cracks/keygens (which are illegal anyway) as viruses. It also happens to dll files that were modified unofficially.

untrue. its only the crappy ones that do this. a real antivirus (kaspersky, nod32) only tells you its a virus if it actually IS a virus, they arent fooled merely because the file is called 'keygen.exe'

untrue. I've seen obvious false positives by kav and not just once.

i'm yet to. its reported viruses as viruses, trojans as trojans and hacking tools as hacking tools.

Yes, i've seen it have a fit with certain programs like OCCT, where they actually did do something unusual (installing drivers for temp monitoring, etc) - but at least it was suspicious behaviour.

kaspersky and nod dont suddenly decide somethings not a virus if you rename keygen.exe to harmless.exe, which is what a ton of shitty AV programs do.

yup I know the problem is what virus does. It applies some changes to the system hence every other program that does some activity to the system can be recognized as virus when it's actually not. mostly people say that panda and symantec got a good system that analyzes behavior of viruses. while avast got high false positive rate.

I personally prefer Avast! Antivirus. No problems, nice features and it's pretty resource lite.

MSE is slow like hell. God forbid you actually downloaded a 2GB ZIP archive full of highly compressable files on a netbook with MSE installed. Or FEAR Combat installer. It will put almost any system to a crawl. It's just On-Access that is this bad and they don't seem to be fixing it in v2.0...

valid point .... first scan will take ages (and forever on netbooks) however second scan will be darn fast. gotta be its engine which they didn't fix like you said. Malwarebytes scan takes ages too. But I'd say it's better slow but safe than fast and fucked up

I use Cyberdefender too, but I haven't had any problems with it at all. Just out of curiosity, what makes it not good?
