PC wont Start Black Screen (keyboard,mouse issue)

Hi all.

Ok so having a problem with my 2nd Rig, for some reason the computer Refuses to start normally All i get is a black screen and monitor goes to standby with the keyboard and mouse plugged into the Usb Ports so far the only way i have been able to start it up with them plugged in is by pressing the keys repeatedly on the Keyboard and clicking on the mouse.

If i unplug them it starts up Fine.

At first i thought it was a problem inside the pc so i decided to Take apart and rebuild as this only started happening when i stuck a new mobo in the new Mobo is a asrock n68-s.

So far i have tried uninstalling the Mouse keyboard drivers but still does the same thing i have also tried a different mouse and keyboard but still no luck.


Any ideas ? Thanks in advance

does it only do it when both of them are plugged in... have you tried to isolate the keyboard or the mouse individually?

Don't know if it will help but you could also try enabling Legacy USB suport in bios.

Sorry should have mentioned this to, I remember ages ago, I was having a simler prob to yours, Turned out my keuboard just decided to go funny and it made my pc do odd things.

You have an asrock mobo? does it have USB and firewire connections on the motherboard? If so and if you have both hooked up then i would check your mobo manual, If its like the old asrock i had you could only hook up USB or Firewire seperatly, If both were used the mobo spannered out.

Ok i just tried them each Individually. Plugged the mouse in on it's own Still wont start unluss i keep clicking and even that is not Guaranteed, Same with the Keybaord aswell.

Also i have tried plugging them in different slot Front ones and also the 4 back ones but same thing.

Well i cant even get the Keyboard to work now i keep pressing F2 but the keyboard wont Respond, I got onto windows Ok and the keyboard was working Fine. I tried 3 different keyboards aswell but same thing.
Yh Im using a Asrock N68-s and no firewire on the board only a cheap one. The board was Working fine Before i fitted it in the Pc i Ran a benchmark Test Before sticking it in the Pc, But as soon as i fitted it in and started it up the problems started ...LOl

Does the keyboard have an anoying FN key? FN = (function key) used to change what the F keys do.

I had to press the FN key on an old microsoft keyboard to make the F keys work so i could get into bios.

If the problems started after building it into the tower/case there might be a chance something is grounding out and making the pc do funny things.

Nope no Fn key on any of my keyboards.

Ok just went through my box of wires Etc and found a Usb to PS2 Converter and plugged that in with my keyboard and can now get on Bios i just enabled Usb Legacy But still doing same thing

I know its a pain but all i can think of due to what you have explained is to take it all back out the tower and test again to see if something in the tower is making it go funny.

Also double check to make sure you have no trapped wires. The only other option would be to use USB to PS/2 converters and see if that helps, Would depend if the mobo still has the old style connections for mouse/keyboard tho.

LMAO you updated your post just as i added this lol.

Any option in bios to turn usb2 on and off? not that it will help but have a mess with it if the option is there. anything is worth a try lol.

Ahhh one last thing comes to mind, Did you hook up front usb on the case and if so was the connection a block type or single pins? could a pin be on the wrong part on the mobo.

Enable Disable Usb Controller
Usb 2.0 Support
Usb Legacy Support

Funny u should Say that about the front Pannel Usb's They are infact Single and this Case well i know nothing about and i had trouble with it before as the labelling is a bit Short.

I got this case from a bootfair it was a silver gaming Case Looked pretty Cool but had no Makers Name or Instruction Manual Etc Bloke wanted £10 for it Got it for £1 ....Bargin

Il Check that tommo anyway as cant see now not much light in this room. I will Find out what pin is labled as what and perhaps you could Help me Figure out if i had done it right ?

I will try but ill need some info on the pins for the front usb.
Hopefully they will be named simler to this.
this is based on the case and mobo having 2 usb. (dx is usb port 1) and (dy port 2)
1.power 5v
2.power 5v
3. DX-
4. DY-
5. DX+
6. DY+
7. GND
8. GND
9 no pin
10 NC << not sure not used i can't remeber.

im hopeing the pins have a simler name on the little bits of plastic or even just a + or -

I will keep me eye open to see when you have had chance to post back tomoz.

P.S your mobo manual should have the naming and layout for the usb ill see if i can check it out online tomoz.

One other thing you could try to, Turn the pc of and rip out the front usb connections and test just the normal usb at the back, If the problem you had seems to go away then it would seem one of them pins is on the wrong way.

Ok, tihs morning before i went to college i decided to put Usb to Ps/2 on both my keyboard and mouse just started it up now and it booted up straight away which is strange it is definatly a mouse and keyboard issuse thing is whatever Keyboard mouse i plug into it By Usb the pc refuses to start which is weird ?

Also i double checked the front pannel Usb and that appeard to be ok Everything working fine.

Did you try without the front usb just to be sure thats not the problem or part of it?

Yh took out the Cable Pins On the motherboard to the front pannel then tried it but Same thing.

Then i stuck them back in Checking each one again.

Damn not good , Im all out of ideas then mate, Maybe its time to take the motherboard back if thats possible because its starting to sound lllike its slightly faulty.

Well Yes and no really..... I still cant Use the mouse and keyboard and i cant boot up the pc if i use the Usb Slots,But i can use them fine and boot up the Pc if i use the Ps/2 Slots.

So at the moment that's fine for me to use, but if any one has any suggestions they would help as i would still like to try to fix.... but if not no worrys.....Thanks though everyone for the Help

animal mentioned earlier about trying it with the mobo outside of the case, did you give that a go?

Ahh i did and it still might be worth trying as if i read right the op did say it worked fine before building it into the case.

Maybe something is making contact with the case and shorting it out when the usb's are in use, or maybe a wire got trapped under the mobo or something.

Ok, i have just done that now, i Unplugged all Front pannel Pins Accept from Start up button and Reset, Took out all Usb Pins aswell, Took the graphics card out Set bios to onboard. Still does the same thing.......... Really weird

You completely removed the motherboard from the case and tested it yea? I would give it a good visual inspection, particularly on the back of the board.

One thing i forgot to mention which may of been Very important which i thought i added but Dident is that Everytime i get into Windows Xp it keeps comming up as detecting new hardware and it has to keep reinstalling the mouse and keyboard during start-up of Xp. The pc Did use to Have windows 7 installed but i got Rid of that and stuck Xp on and it done the same thing on W7.

Sounds to me like the USB chip is failing or losing power, any usb power saving options in bios you can turn of?

I dont supose you have a spare PSU you could test do you? Not that the PSU would cause this problem but pc's have been known to do strange things hehe.

I dont have one Atm but i can get one tommo from college that i'll Borrow I'll give that Ago should be home about 12 so il let you know what happends from there.

I Had alook through Bios Cant Really See anything that could be turned off Related to the Usb.

Ok, Instead i borrowed a Tested Psu From some Pc engineer i know down my road. Also asked him to check out the board and he couldent find anything wrong with it. What was Werid though is he Used his microsoft Soft and Keyboard and it started up fine. But as soon as i stuck my keyboard and mouse in on his powersupply it wouldent start up.................Very weird...... and the Funny thing is they keybaord and mouse work fine on all my other pc's.
