Because the HD5850 is not what the 334 mm^2 Cypress chip is, the HD5870 is the real 334 mm chip, which has 1600 SP and runs at 850 Mhz, but could had a 900 Mhz reference speed too, and at 900 Mhz is a good 30% faster than HD5850/HD6870 cancelling out the "advantage". The 5850 is a harvestd part, a crippled part and underclocked to 725 Mhz. In order to make a fair comparison they should have done HD5870 vs 6870 or 5850 vs 6850. In both cases HD5000 wins performance wise, and perf/die area is similar, so that wouldn't allow them the trick.

Why are you compareing the 6850 & 6870 to the 5850 & 5870, the barts chips are mid-range, the 5850 and 5870 were high-end. The cayman chip will be the sucessor of the 58xx series. You can compare the die-sizes than.

It's not me who is comparing, it's AMD doing it and claiming things that at least Barts is not fullfilling.

EDIT: And see guys? They just can't miss one opportunity to save AMD from my "attack".

OMG, dont be a dick. I am not defending AMD. I had a 8800gt before i got the 4870. And honestly i dont give a f**k which one it is the reds or the greens, as long as i get performance/price ratio and ofcourse power-consumption.(Whitch honestly Nvidia cant deliver, for now.)

I disagree. You are right that the 5850 uses a harvested core and is clocked lower than the 6870 but they both use the same power of ~150W. They have reached their set goal or the "limit" of the 5850 chip which for them is 150W. You can clock it higher or you can use a 5870 for the comparison but you will always go over that 150W "limit". So in a way it is a fair comparison.

Never said the power consumption was not better, so don't assume that I did. They are claiming both better power and better die area. I said die area claim is false. I said power consumption is better tho.

Well they can't really claim better power because the power is the same due to the higher core clock :D

I don't know if i explained myself properly. What I meant was that both ATi and Nvidia have some internal goals for each chip they design like size, power consumption, heat, performance, etc. So whenever a design reaches one of those limits, they have to either lower the clock/voltage or start disabling/chopping stuff from it. And in a way the 5850 chip has hit its optimal configuration.

Some just need to calm down in this thread. You're just getting too worked upped on this. All will be explained come Friday.

I'm guessing the reason for the "move up" (if you will) in names is to make room for the in coming of Llano. There was a couple over on the S/A forums that speculated a 400 SP GPU on the Llano demo AMD put up on their Youtube (given the GFlop quote was ~500).

If Llano does come in around 400 SP on the GPU part, then anything below a 5750 is irreverent for future development of a discrete version and even a 5750 equivalent is in question.

If anyone is bored they should see if they can find the gpu id number for that demoed part (hint: its in the video).

I give. I don't get it.

Amd radeon hd 6850 gpuz shot (over clocked)
i have found this pic on some arab website so lets share it

Do you know if that is on stock voltage? I'm guessing not.......or maybe I should say I'm hoping not.

If this card will overclock like this ill sh*t bricks

Second!

There's gonna be great brand new cards from AMD out then, the 67xx series, get two and crossfire them.

<sarcasm>

Any serious reply to this post gets shot

Just thought, as it's well known NV scales better with sli, we should start calling crossfire 'misfire' until it reaches parity with NV.

Oh yea?!

Compare. 320 shaders, 3870, 780mhz, vs 900mhz 960 shaders. Efficiency?

i can easily believe that ive had my VTX3d 5870 reflashed with asus bios running at 1050 and 1300 mem:cool: since i got it and its never seen 58%c its wc on 1.256 Volts too, and just t throw my coin in im gona be holding out for the full northern islands core and uncore in hopefully 7990 or some such flavour times 2 with a shit(by then gtx 460) for physx in me octo lano 8 gig wc monnster and will be slowly migratin to that spec over the next year or so
just gona have to suffer a ok crysis 3 for a bit it seems and i think all in all you all should show just a tiny bit of love:eek: to both nv and amd because 1 would be even worse without the other they both do good stuff now and again and im buyin now n again simples.

Guys; in your opinion what will be the gaming performance % gain for 6970 over 5870, and what is the expected selling price?

id say optimistacally in some situations twice as fast 5870 - 6970 but sometimes only as much as 30% quicker ie in nv optimized games like mafia 2, 6990 well thats gona be special and definately 2 times performance in most cases more

Would be nice to see at least a 35% and above increase in most to all games(which shouldn't be hard judging by the crappy console port games were getting on PC). Price, I'd probably expect it to be around $450-$480 to battle it out with the GTX 480 with the 6850 being around $325-$350 to fight with the GTX 470. And the dual GPU card possibly the ''6990'' i like to see at least a 20%-25% increase over the 5970 with the price being around the same(around $600)

this is seeming more and more a 2900xt -> 3870 situation, though perhaps a g80 -> g92 comparison would be more appropriate.

the only real issue is in both of those cases the dual gpu card became the extremist part whereas a single card had been so previously.

at any rate whatever the cards are called we are looking at a previous gen highend compteting with a current gen midrange which is a win in my book. as long as cayman beats cypress I'm happy, I never really was expecting barts to beat cypress.

so we get similar performance for a lower cost in a smaller card for similar or less power requirements. and then we even get a bigger card and a dual bigger card to boot. very interested in the tesselation benches, seems to be much better than cypress already with barts.
