Are there any free computer security system out there that work and stop viruses?

My sister just got a computer, her McAfee expires in a month. I pay 40 dollars a month for my security on my computer but she doesn't want to pay like me. Any free computer security systems?

I found avira antivir to be pretty good, it's what I have been using for a few months and no problems so far.

I used AVG before this and I had like 20 viruses

I've used Avast! Home Edition for a couple of years now, and it's a great program. Not resource hungry like a McAfee.

I also use Avira. It is very effective IMO. I previously always used AVG, but a couple of years ago it became rather bloated, so I changed. I despise McAfee and Norton, as they are expensive and resource hungry and do not handle the situation any better than the free alternatives.

All of the above are great options i prefer Microsoft security essentials.There is absolutely no reason to pay for Internet security with all of these great products on the market

if i was you i better of buying kaspersky its $30 for a YEAR, and can be used for 3 computer, its the best av i ever have

Well, yes and no. The security suites often have other features as well, like backup and so on. Sure there are free programs for all the parts of the suites, but it's nice to have everything under one roof so to speak. I wouldn't buy anything like that though, but some people finds it comfortable.

AVAST was good a while back, havent used it for ages

I don't use antivirus on my main system, but it has Linux.

For Windows systems, MSE or Avast would be good

Hmm, it seems that the latest version of Comodo installs on Windows Server 2003. That's interesting... so few "free" antivirus will work with W2K3. I'll report back after a few days to let you know if it is all working fine.

If you have Windows Vista or 7, you can use Microsoft Security Essentials, which works great and is free. Also there is AVG anti-virus and Avast! Both have free versions and work pretty well.

Works with Windows XP as well

Bullshits of course! He means per year definitely. You could have known that if you used your mind a bit and searched for price info on the web.

And if you search well you could easily install McAfee on 3 PCs for roughly 30 bucks or so per year (I paid 20 euro by ordering it on Azerty.nl) instead of the usual 40-60 bucks for 3 installs.

And may I have a source for that resource hog stuff? I don't know abourt Norton, but afaik McAfee is not that bad in that that aspect. The only real annoyance I have is the large amount of false positives. But I don't mind that that much because it is the cheapest (of the paid IS suites) as long as I can share a license with my father (who only wants McAfee atm). I have been looking at the free suites but afaik they have issues like "only AV", "includes both AV and firewall, but the fw is not strong enough", "FW is great, but the AV is not good enough" (as said in reviews of Comodo) and personally I don't like to take such risks.

Comcast used to give it with their internet and yup it's terrible for sure. Although Comcast switched to Norton so if the OP's in the US and is paying $50 ish a month to his ISP Comcast might be a way to go..
